President Ramaphosa authorises SANDF deployment in fight against crime
President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the deployment of 2,200 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members under Operation Prosper. Running from March 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, this R823.1 million nationwide initiative spans five provinces, with localized operations already underway in Gauteng hotspots like Riverlea, Westbury, and Benoni. The military intervention serves as a critical “force multiplier” to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in volatile communities where traditional law enforcement has been overwhelmed by heavily armed syndicates.
The primary objectives of this massive deployment are to dismantle organized criminal networks, specifically targeting the scourge of illegal mining (“zama zamas”) and rampant gang violence that have severely threatened national stability. By assisting police with high-risk tactical operations—such as door-to-door contraband searches, illegal firearm recovery, and vital infrastructure protection—the SANDF aims to neutralize immediate threats and restore law and order. This collaborative effort allows specialized police units to focus on long-term investigations, offering renewed hope for safety to communities terrorized by organized crime.
A Nationwide Security Intervention
The SANDF deployment officially commenced on 1 March 2026 and is scheduled to run until 31 March 2027, spanning a 13-month period. Initial tactical operations began in known crime hotspots such as Riverlea and Westbury in Johannesburg on 11 March, followed by further deployment to Benoni in Gauteng on 12 March.
This intervention is not isolated but forms part of a broader national strategy targeting five key provinces most affected by organised crime:
- Gauteng
- Western Cape
- Eastern Cape
- Free State
- North West
According to the Presidency, approximately 2,200 SANDF members have been deployed across the country, with around 550 stationed in Gauteng alone. This significant military presence reflects the seriousness of the security threat facing the nation.
Why the SANDF Was Deployed
When President Ramaphosa authorises SANDF deployment in fight against crime, the decision is rooted in urgent necessity rather than political symbolism. South Africa has witnessed a surge in heavily armed criminal syndicates operating with increasing sophistication, often outmatching local law enforcement.
1. Combating Illegal Mining
One of the primary drivers behind the deployment is the rise of illegal mining operations, commonly associated with “zama zamas.” These groups have evolved into highly organised, heavily armed networks linked to international syndicates.
Illegal mining has not only caused severe economic losses but has also led to violent clashes, infrastructure damage, and the destabilisation of entire communities. Areas such as Benoni and parts of the East Rand have become hotspots for these activities, prompting the need for a stronger, militarised response.
2. Tackling Gang Violence
Communities like Westbury and Riverlea have long been plagued by gang-related violence. Turf wars between rival groups have resulted in high murder rates, often involving military-grade weapons.
The SANDF’s role is to provide reinforcement to SAPS in these high-risk environments, helping to stabilise communities and reduce violent confrontations. Their presence also serves as a deterrent to criminal elements who previously operated with little fear of consequences.
3. Restoring Public Confidence
Beyond direct enforcement, the deployment aims to restore public confidence in the state’s ability to protect its citizens. For many residents, the visible presence of soldiers on the streets is a powerful signal that the government is taking decisive action.
By reinforcing law enforcement, the SANDF acts as a “force multiplier,” enabling SAPS to extend its reach and effectiveness in areas that have been difficult to control.
Operation Prosper: The Strategic Framework
The deployment operates under the framework of Operation Prosper, a coordinated initiative designed to dismantle organised crime networks and secure affected regions.
Supporting Law Enforcement
The SANDF is not replacing SAPS but working alongside it. Soldiers assist in high-risk operations such as:
- Conducting searches for illegal weapons
- Supporting raids on suspected criminal hideouts
- Providing backup during dangerous arrests
This collaboration allows police officers to focus more on intelligence-driven investigations while the military handles high-risk tactical support.
Securing Infrastructure
Another critical objective is the protection of key infrastructure. Illegal mining and organised crime have frequently targeted essential services, including power stations, transport routes, and municipal facilities.
By guarding these assets and maintaining a strong presence through patrols and roadblocks, the SANDF helps ensure continuity of essential services while limiting opportunities for criminal activity.
The Financial Cost of Security
The scale of this operation comes with a significant financial commitment. The government has allocated approximately R823 million for the 13-month deployment, highlighting the urgency and importance of addressing the crime crisis.
While the cost is substantial, officials argue that the economic and social consequences of unchecked crime would be far greater. Illegal mining alone has cost the South African economy billions of rand annually, while violent crime continues to deter investment and strain public resources.
Legal and Constitutional Backing
The deployment of the SANDF is firmly grounded in South Africa’s constitutional framework. President Ramaphosa acted in accordance with Section 201 of the Constitution, which grants the head of state the authority to deploy the military in cooperation with the police.
In an official statement, the Presidency confirmed that Parliament had been duly informed, ensuring transparency and adherence to democratic processes.
This move also aligns with commitments made during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, where the President emphasised the need for stronger action against organised crime and illegal mining.
Community Cooperation is Key
While the military presence is a significant step, the government has stressed that lasting success depends on community involvement. Residents are encouraged to work closely with both SAPS and the SANDF by:
- Reporting suspicious activities
- Providing anonymous tips
- Supporting law enforcement efforts
Community cooperation is essential in identifying criminal networks and preventing their resurgence once the military deployment ends.
A Critical Moment for South Africa
President Ramaphosa authorises SANDF deployment in fight against crime at a time when the country faces mounting pressure to address its security challenges. The operation represents one of the most comprehensive responses to organised crime in recent years.
For communities affected by violence and instability, this intervention offers a chance for renewal. However, it also raises important questions about long-term solutions, including economic reform, job creation, and strengthening policing capacity.

Conclusion: A Nation Fighting Back
As South Africa confronts rising crime levels, the deployment of the SANDF sends a clear and unmistakable message: the state is prepared to act decisively to protect its citizens.
While the success of this operation will depend on coordination, accountability, and community support, it marks a significant step toward reclaiming communities from the grip of organised crime.
For now, as soldiers patrol the streets of Gauteng and beyond, South Africa stands united in its determination to restore peace, uphold the rule of law, and secure a safer future for all.
