New Sundowns recruits Step Up To Send Downs To MTN8 Semi-Finals
Sundowns into semi-finals with a 3-2 win over Polokwane City after a dramatic extra-time battle that showcased the quality and resilience of Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Brazilians secured their place in the MTN8 semi-finals with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon, overcoming an early setback before eventually finding the decisive goal in extra time.
The result was particularly significant for Sundowns, with several new recruits making important contributions as Miguel Cardoso’s side survived a difficult challenge from the Limpopo outfit.
Mamelodi Sundowns survive Polokwane City challenge
Mamelodi Sundowns entered the quarter-final as one of the favourites to progress, but Polokwane City immediately demonstrated that they would not simply allow the defending champions to dictate proceedings.
The home side endured a difficult opening seven minutes before Polokwane City took advantage of a defensive lapse from a set-piece.
Bonginkosi Dlamini found himself unmarked at the far post and made no mistake from a tight angle, firing the ball into the net to give Rise and Shine a 1-0 lead.
The early goal forced Sundowns to respond, and the Brazilians gradually began to establish greater control of possession.
Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Teboho Mokoena restored parity.
New signing Antonio Van Wyk played an important role in the move, helping create the opportunity before Mokoena skipped past a challenge and fired a low effort into the bottom corner.
The equaliser changed the momentum of the match, with Sundowns beginning to apply sustained pressure on their opponents.
Antonio Van Wyk shines on Sundowns debut
Antonio Van Wyk quickly became one of the central figures in the contest.
The new signing not only contributed to Sundowns’ equalising goal but also put his name on the scoresheet before half-time.
In the 31st minute, Van Wyk capitalised on an error from Tlou Nkwe inside a dangerous area.
The attacker remained composed under pressure before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper to give Sundowns a 2-1 advantage.
It was a memorable debut for Van Wyk, who immediately demonstrated why Sundowns invested in strengthening their squad.
The turnaround also highlighted the depth available to Cardoso, with the club’s new recruits playing a significant role in determining the outcome.
Despite falling behind, Polokwane City refused to collapse.
The visitors continued searching for opportunities and remained dangerous from set-pieces, an area that would eventually cause further problems for the Sundowns defence.
Polokwane City fight back again
Sundowns controlled much of the second half but were unable to extend their lead.
Polokwane City were handed another setback when goalkeeper Lidokhule Mbatha was forced off with an injury shortly before the hour mark.
Ayanda Ngwenya came on for his debut as the replacement goalkeeper, adding another layer of difficulty to an already demanding match.
However, Polokwane soon found a way back into the contest.
Once again, Sundowns were punished from a set-piece.
Lebohang Nkaki headed the ball into the path of Tidimalo Molokwane, who showed excellent composure to round Ronwen Williams before firing into an empty net.
The goal restored parity at 2-2 and ensured that the quarter-final would go down to the wire.
Sundowns continued to dominate possession after the equaliser, but Polokwane City’s defensive organisation prevented the Brazilians from finding a winner during normal time.
MTN8 semi-finals decided in extra time
With the scores level after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes provided Sundowns with another opportunity to demonstrate their squad depth.
Cardoso introduced several players during the latter stages, including Cassius Mailula, Kutlwano Letlhaku and Aubrey Modiba, as Sundowns searched for the goal that would secure their progression.
Polokwane City continued to defend bravely, while Sundowns increased the pressure.
The Brazilians came close on several occasions but could not immediately find the decisive finish.
As the match approached the final stages, penalties appeared increasingly likely.
However, Sundowns produced the moment of quality they needed in the 113th minute.
Cassius Mailula delivers the winning goal
Cassius Mailula became the hero for Sundowns when he scored the decisive third goal.
The move began with experienced midfielder Themba Zwane creating space and laying the ball into Mailula’s path.
The forward needed no second invitation.
Mailula unleashed a powerful low strike from around 20 yards, beating the goalkeeper and sending the ball into the back of the net.
The goal sparked celebrations among the Sundowns players and supporters as the Brazilians finally regained the advantage.
With only minutes remaining, Polokwane City attempted to find another equaliser, but Sundowns held firm.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-2 victory and booked Mamelodi Sundowns’ place in the MTN8 semi-finals.
New signings make the difference
The victory was particularly encouraging for Sundowns because of the contributions from their new recruits.
Van Wyk was arguably one of the standout performers after scoring on his debut and helping his team recover from an early deficit.
Mailula also demonstrated his value by producing the decisive finish after coming on during the latter stages.
Mokoena’s goal was equally important because it helped Sundowns recover from Polokwane City’s early advantage.
The performances underline the strength in depth available to Cardoso as Sundowns compete on multiple fronts.
For Polokwane City, the defeat will be difficult to accept after twice recovering from a deficit and taking the match into extra time.
Their ability to challenge one of South Africa’s strongest clubs for 120 minutes nevertheless provided plenty of encouragement.
What the result means for Sundowns
Sundowns’ progression keeps their hopes of winning the MTN8 alive.
The club entered the competition with ambitions of challenging for another trophy, and Saturday’s result ensured that those ambitions remain intact.
The match also provided Cardoso with valuable information about his squad.
The involvement of players such as Van Wyk and Mailula demonstrated that Sundowns have attacking options capable of influencing important knockout matches.
The defensive vulnerabilities, particularly from set-pieces, will nevertheless be an area the technical team will want to address before the semi-final.
Sundowns conceded twice from situations that could have been handled more effectively.
Against another strong opponent in the next round, similar mistakes could prove costly.
