11th woman’s body found in Ekurhuleni as Springs discovery deepens concern
Ekurhuleni Murders | 11th woman’s body found in Springs as Gauteng police investigate the discovery of another woman’s body in an open veld near Rhokana Road in Springs.
The discovery on Sunday, 27 September 2026, has added to growing concern over a series of cases involving women’s bodies found across Ekurhuleni in recent months.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that a security company vehicle patrolling the area noticed the body and alerted police. A multidisciplinary team has since been mobilised to process the crime scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
The latest discovery comes a day after police confirmed the death of another woman at Mooifontein Cemetery in Tembisa, where a suspect has since been arrested.
Ekurhuleni murders: Another woman found dead
The latest Ekurhuleni murders investigation began after SAPS Springs responded to the open veld near Rhokana Road at approximately midday on Sunday.
Police said the woman’s body was discovered by a security company vehicle while personnel were patrolling the area.
The circumstances surrounding her death had not yet been fully established when police released the initial information.
Authorities have also not publicly confirmed the identity of the deceased woman.
A report by The South African said the latest discovery was made near a railway line in the Struisbult area of Springs. Police, however, have focused their initial confirmation on the open veld near Rhokana Road and said further information would be released after preliminary investigations.
This means important details, including the woman’s identity, cause of death and whether she was reported missing, remain subject to investigation.
11th woman’s body found in Springs
The 11th woman’s body found in the wider investigation has intensified attention on the work being carried out by Gauteng police.
According to eNCA, the latest discovery brings the number of victims found in the area to 11.
Police have mobilised several specialised units to the scene.
These include the Task Team investigating the Ekurhuleni murder cases, Crime Scene Management, Investigative Psychology Services, detectives and Crime Intelligence.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni was also reported to be travelling to the scene following the discovery.
The involvement of multiple investigative units reflects the seriousness of the cases and the need to establish whether there are links between individual incidents.
However, authorities have not confirmed that all of the deaths are connected.
Springs woman murder investigation underway
The Springs woman murder investigation is still at an early stage.
Police need to establish how the woman died, when she died and how her body came to be in the open veld.
Crime Scene Management personnel will be responsible for processing the scene and collecting evidence that could assist detectives.
Investigators will also need to establish the woman’s identity and locate her family or next of kin.
At this stage, it would be premature to conclude that the latest death is connected to the other cases under investigation in Ekurhuleni.
The South African reported that authorities had not publicly confirmed whether the latest discovery was linked to the other deaths.
This distinction is important because several women have been found dead in different locations and under different circumstances.
Police have previously indicated that investigators are examining individual cases while also considering whether there could be connections between some of them.
Police examine evidence at Rhokana Road
The location where the latest body was found will form an important part of the investigation.
The security company vehicle that discovered the body may provide investigators with information about when the area was patrolled and when the body was first noticed.
Police will also examine the surrounding area for potential evidence and speak to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity.
Investigators may use forensic evidence, witness statements, surveillance footage and intelligence information to build a clearer picture of what happened.
Authorities have not released details about possible suspects in the Springs case.
Ekurhuleni murder task team deployed
The Ekurhuleni murder task team continues to investigate a number of cases involving women whose bodies have been discovered across the metro.
The latest investigation involves several specialist police functions.
Crime Intelligence can assist detectives by gathering information about potential suspects and movements, while Investigative Psychology Services can provide specialised assistance in analysing aspects of the cases.
Crime Scene Management is responsible for processing physical evidence, while detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding each death.
Police have previously faced questions about whether the deaths could be connected.
However, investigators have cautioned against reaching conclusions before forensic and investigative work has been completed.
The latest Springs discovery therefore adds another case to an already complex investigation.
Tembisa cemetery murder suspect arrested
The Springs discovery came one day after police confirmed another woman’s death in Tembisa.
On Saturday, 26 September, the body of Ntombifuthu Nxumalo was found at Mooifontein Cemetery in the Vusimusi section of Tembisa.
Police said Nxumalo was found naked and had suffered serious head injuries.
Stones were found around her body, raising the possibility that she may have been stoned. Police said there were no visible stab wounds at the scene.
Investigators subsequently arrested a suspect in Limpopo.
According to Sowetan, police traced the suspect to an address in Thembisa before establishing that he had travelled to Limpopo. A joint team involving crime intelligence, Thembisa South detectives and Investigative Psychology Services then worked with SAPS Bolobedu to locate him.
The suspect was reportedly found asleep in his room and arrested.
The arrest represents a development in the Tembisa investigation, but it does not establish a connection between that case and the newly discovered body in Springs.
Gauteng police investigation continues
The Gauteng police investigation now involves continued efforts to establish the identities and circumstances surrounding the women whose bodies have been discovered.
Police have urged caution while investigations continue, particularly because the circumstances of individual cases can differ.
The authorities also need to establish whether suspects, if identified, acted alone or with others.
In the Springs case, investigators have not announced an arrest and have not identified a suspect.
The latest information remains preliminary.
No confirmed link between cases
The discovery of multiple women’s bodies in Ekurhuleni has naturally raised questions about whether the cases are connected.
Police, however, have not confirmed that the latest Springs case is part of a single series of murders.
The distinction is also reflected in reporting on previous cases.
Earlier this month, Gauteng police said investigations were continuing into the deaths while authorities worked to establish whether there were connections between the incidents.
The possibility of links must therefore be treated as an investigative question rather than an established fact.

Families await answers
Behind the investigation are families who may be waiting to learn the whereabouts or fate of missing relatives.
Identifying unidentified victims is an important part of the police process because it allows authorities to notify next of kin and begin establishing the person’s movements before their death.
Forensic examination can also help determine the cause and circumstances of death.
In the latest Springs case, police have not yet released the identity of the woman.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information once preliminary investigations have been completed.
The Ekurhuleni murders investigation remains a developing story, and further information could change the understanding of individual cases.
For now, police are focused on processing the latest crime scene, identifying the deceased woman and determining what happened near Rhokana Road.
The discovery also comes as investigators continue working on the Tembisa cemetery murder and other cases involving women found dead in the region.
As the 11th woman’s body found in the broader sequence adds to the investigation, the key questions for police remain the same: who was responsible, what was the motive, and whether any of the separate cases are connected.
The Springs woman murder investigation is expected to provide more answers as detectives and forensic specialists process the evidence.
