Arrows edge Stellies 1-0 for first league win in Betway Premiership
Arrows edge Stellies 1-0 for first league win in Betway Premiership as Golden Arrows continued their impressive early-season momentum by defeating Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The victory marked Golden Arrows’ first league win of the Betway Premiership 2026/27 campaign and continued the club’s strong run following their impressive MTN8 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.
For Stellenbosch FC, the defeat represented another setback in the league, with the Western Cape side dropping to 11th position after four matches.
Golden Arrows secure crucial Betway Premiership victory
Golden Arrows entered the fixture looking to transform their recent cup form into league success. The Durban-based club had already produced an eye-catching MTN8 performance against Mamelodi Sundowns, and they carried that confidence into their clash with Stellenbosch FC.
The hosts were aggressive from the opening stages, looking to create opportunities through their attacking players and put pressure on the Stellenbosch defence.
The first major opportunity arrived before the quarter-hour mark when Thokozani Khumalo received the ball inside the penalty area, turned towards goal and unleashed an effort.
However, Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens was alert and positioned himself well to make a comfortable smothering save.
The early chance demonstrated Golden Arrows’ attacking intentions, but Stellenbosch gradually settled into the contest.
Stellenbosch FC create opportunities
Stellenbosch FC responded by creating several promising opportunities of their own as the first half progressed.
Raoul Daniels came close after lifting his attempt over the target, while Sinoxolo Kwayiba had an opportunity to break the deadlock when he was unable to convert a close-range header.
Golden Arrows continued searching for an opening, with their set-piece threat also causing problems for the visitors.
Defender Themba Mantshiyane went close approximately 10 minutes before the interval after connecting with a corner kick. His header, however, narrowly missed the target.
The hosts then threatened again during first-half stoppage time.
Sabelo Sithole found space on the edge of the penalty area and managed to get a shot away, but his effort failed to find the target.
Neither side could make the breakthrough before half-time, sending the teams into the interval level at 0-0.
Sede Junior Dion makes the difference
Golden Arrows continued applying pressure after the restart and were eventually rewarded for their persistence.
The breakthrough came in the 70th minute, with substitute Sede Junior Dion once again proving decisive.
Dion rose at the far post to meet a dangerous cross from Thokozani Khumalo on the right flank. The Ivorian-born forward produced an excellent header to send the ball into the net and give Golden Arrows a 1-0 advantage.
The goal was particularly significant because Dion had also scored the decisive goal in Golden Arrows’ MTN8 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns during the weekend.
His ability to make an immediate impact from the bench has therefore provided Golden Arrows with another important attacking weapon.
Golden Arrows defend their lead
Stellenbosch FC immediately looked for a response after falling behind.
The visitors introduced Genino Palace, Kgaogelo Ramashu and Bradley Grobler as they attempted to increase their attacking threat and find an equaliser.
Golden Arrows, however, remained organised defensively.
The hosts managed the closing stages effectively, limiting Stellenbosch’s opportunities and protecting their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result means Golden Arrows claimed their first league victory of the campaign while maintaining their unbeaten record after four matches.

Golden Arrows vs Stellenbosch: what comes next?
The result gives Golden Arrows valuable momentum as they prepare for another challenging period in the Betway Premiership 2026/27.
Their next league assignment will be particularly demanding as they prepare to face Mamelodi Sundowns on 6 September.
The fixture will give Sede Junior Dion and his teammates another opportunity to test themselves against one of the league’s leading teams.
Stellenbosch FC will also be looking to respond quickly when they travel to face Durban City on 1 September.
For Stellies, the priority will be to turn promising performances into points and climb away from the lower half of the table.
Dion emerging as Golden Arrows’ match-winner
The emergence of Sede Junior Dion as a decisive attacking player could become one of the major talking points surrounding Golden Arrows.
After scoring against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8, the forward followed that performance by finding the net against Stellenbosch FC.
His latest goal was also a demonstration of his ability to influence matches after being introduced from the bench.
Golden Arrows will hope his form continues as the campaign develops.
