Pirates start title defence with win as PSL usher in 30th anniversary celebrations
Orlando Pirates defeat Milford FC 2-0 in league opener to make the perfect start to their Betway Premiership 2026/27 title defence, with goals from Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi securing all three points in front of a sold-out crowd at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
The reigning champions controlled large spells of the encounter against league newcomers Milford FC, showing resilience, patience and quality to begin the new domestic campaign on a winning note. The result temporarily lifted Orlando Pirates to the top of the league standings after the opening round of fixtures and sent a strong message to their title rivals.
Orlando Pirates begin Betway Premiership 2026/27 with victory
The wait for the return of South African top-flight football ended in style as Orlando Pirates welcomed newly promoted Milford FC to Soweto for their opening fixture of the Betway Premiership 2026/27 season.
A festive atmosphere surrounded the match, with thousands of supporters packing Orlando Stadium to celebrate the beginning of another league campaign. The fixture also coincided with the Premier Soccer League’s 30th anniversary celebrations, making the occasion even more memorable.
Pirates enjoyed most of the possession from kickoff and immediately looked to stamp their authority on the match. However, despite dominating territory, the Buccaneers struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities during the early stages.
Milford, making their top-flight debut, defended with discipline and showed little fear against the defending champions.
Milford FC test the champions early
Although Pirates controlled possession, Milford FC proved they had not come to merely defend.
The visitors threatened through long-range efforts that forced goalkeeper Sipho Chaine into action. Chaine reacted brilliantly to deny an early attempt before producing another excellent save to keep out Cebolenkosi Mthethwa’s powerful strike midway through the first half.
The newly promoted side displayed confidence in possession and attempted to play attacking football whenever opportunities arose, earning praise for refusing to sit back against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Despite their positive approach, Milford struggled to convert possession into genuine goal-scoring chances.
Oswin Appollis breaks the deadlock
Free-kick gives Pirates deserved lead
The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute following a foul on striker Yanela Mbuthuma just outside the penalty area.
Oswin Appollis stepped up confidently and curled a dangerous free-kick toward goal. The ball took a slight deflection off the defensive wall, wrong-footing goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza before finding the back of the net.
The strike handed Pirates a deserved 1-0 lead after sustained pressure and settled any early nerves among the home supporters.
Appollis celebrated emotionally by raising his hands with the number 23, paying tribute to the late Jayden Adams in a touching moment after scoring the first Betway Premiership goal of the new season.
Pirates nearly doubled their advantage before halftime when Deon Hotto came close from another set-piece, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.
Orlando Pirates maintain control after halftime
The Buccaneers continued to dominate possession after the restart but initially struggled to convert their territorial advantage into meaningful opportunities.
Milford defended with determination and remained organised despite spending long periods without the ball.
Thalente Mbatha tested goalkeeper Hleza shortly before the hour mark, but his effort was comfortably saved after taking a slight deflection.
Although Pirates lacked their usual attacking fluency, they remained patient while searching for a decisive second goal.
Tshepang Moremi seals the victory
Late goal rewards Pirates’ persistence
The pressure eventually paid off in the closing minutes.
After being denied earlier by Hleza, Tshepang Moremi finally found his breakthrough in the 84th minute.
Timing his run perfectly behind the Milford defence, the winger raced clear before rounding the goalkeeper and calmly finishing into an empty net to make it 2-0.
The goal effectively ended the contest and ensured Pirates collected maximum points to begin their title defence.
The home supporters celebrated enthusiastically as head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou joined in the celebrations from the technical area.
Milford FC earn respect despite defeat
Although the final score favoured Pirates, Milford FC left Orlando Stadium with plenty of positives.
The debutants showed courage by refusing to abandon their attacking philosophy against the defending champions.
Unlike many promoted sides, Milford attempted to build attacks patiently instead of simply defending deep throughout the match.
Their willingness to compete openly demonstrated that they intend to establish themselves in South Africa’s top division rather than merely survive.
Coach and players can also take encouragement from their defensive organisation, particularly during long periods of sustained pressure from Pirates.
As the season progresses, Milford’s experience at this level is expected to improve significantly.
Orlando Pirates continue without Relebohile Mofokeng
Pirates entered the new season without reigning PSL Footballer of the Season Relebohile Mofokeng, who recently completed his move to Belgium.
Supporters instead turned their attention to new Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen, who received a warm reception despite not making his league debut.
The Ghost have already embraced the forward, introducing the famous Viking rowing chant made popular during Norway’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
While Pedersen watched from the sidelines, Pirates showed they still possess enough attacking quality to win matches through experienced campaigners like Appollis, Moremi, Patrick Maswanganyi and Deon Hotto.
PSL celebrates 30 years
Before kickoff, supporters witnessed a colourful ceremony celebrating 30 years of Premier Soccer League football.
The league recognised clubs that contributed to its growth while music group Gwijo Avenue entertained supporters before the match.
The celebrations reflected the PSL’s remarkable journey over the past three decades and highlighted the continued growth of professional football in South Africa.
Beginning the milestone season with a packed Orlando Stadium demonstrated the continued popularity of the domestic game.
Pirates look ahead to MTN8 challenge
While Orlando Pirates will be pleased with the victory, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou knows improvements are still needed.
The team occasionally lacked sharpness in the final third and created fewer chances than expected despite dominating possession.
Those areas are likely to receive attention before next weekend’s MTN8 clash against Durban City.
Nevertheless, beginning the campaign with three points provides confidence heading into the busy opening weeks of the season.
Positive signs for the champions
The victory showcased several encouraging signs for the defending champions.
Their defence remained organised throughout the match, Sipho Chaine produced important saves when called upon, and the team demonstrated patience before eventually breaking down determined opposition.
With experienced players leading the way and new arrivals still settling into the squad, Pirates appear well positioned for another strong campaign.
