Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail in two provinces on Sunday has been issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), alerting residents to potentially dangerous weather conditions expected across parts of the country.
The warning highlights the risk of intense rainfall, thunderstorms, small hail, strong winds and excessive lightning, particularly in parts of Limpopo and the North West. Weather warnings such as these are aimed at reducing the risk to life, property and infrastructure as unstable atmospheric conditions persist.
Severe weather warning issued by SAWS
According to SAWS, a yellow Level 2 weather warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms expected on Sunday. These storms may result in heavy rain, localized flooding, hail accumulation and damaging wind gusts. Residents in affected areas are urged to remain cautious and stay updated with official forecasts.
The Western Bushveld of Limpopo and the extreme eastern parts of the North West province are expected to experience the most intense thunderstorm activity. These conditions may lead to short-term disruptions, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Additional weather warnings across South Africa
In addition to the Level 2 warning, SAWS has also issued a yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves affecting northern KwaZulu-Natal. These conditions may pose risks to small vessels, coastal infrastructure and beachgoers.
Meanwhile, extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over several regions, including:
-
Kamiesberg and Hantam municipalities (Northern Cape)
-
Matzikama, Cederberg, Witzenberg and Prins Albert municipalities (Western Cape)
Hot, dry conditions combined with strong winds significantly increase the risk of runaway veld fires in these areas.
Hot and uncomfortable conditions expected
Beyond thunderstorms and rain, hot to extremely hot conditions are forecast over the western Northern Cape, the West Coast District, City of Cape Town, and the western parts of the Cape Winelands on Sunday and Monday. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
