Vinícius Júnior leads Brazil rout of Scotland to top group
Brazil beat Scotland 3-0 to win World Cup Group C as the five-time world champions produced another commanding performance to secure top spot in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C. The victory was made even more memorable by the emotional return of Neymar, who played his first international match in 981 days after a lengthy injury absence.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side delivered an impressive display filled with attacking quality, defensive discipline, and relentless pressing. Vinícius Júnior once again proved why he is currently one of the world’s best players, scoring twice, while Matheus Cunha added another goal to seal a comfortable victory over Scotland.
For Brazilian supporters, however, the biggest celebration came in the 76th minute when Neymar stepped onto the field wearing the famous number 10 shirt once again.
Vinícius Júnior inspires Brazil to another convincing victory
Brazil entered the match knowing a victory would guarantee first place in the group, and they wasted little time asserting their dominance.
The opening goal arrived after just seven minutes when Scotland attempted to build from the back. Rayan’s pressing forced a defensive mistake, allowing Vinícius Júnior to intercept before calmly rounding goalkeeper Angus Gunn and slotting into an empty net.
The Real Madrid superstar thought he had doubled the advantage midway through the first half, but VAR ruled his effort out after judging he had fouled Jack Hendry during the build-up.
Brazil refused to slow down.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Matheus Cunha intercepted another loose Scottish pass before Bruno Guimarães delivered an inch-perfect cross. Vinícius rose highest to head home Brazil’s second goal and put the Seleção firmly in control before halftime.
Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical approach pays off
Since taking charge of Brazil, Carlo Ancelotti has transformed the team’s playing style.
Against Scotland, Brazil pressed aggressively from the front, won possession high up the pitch and prevented Scotland from building any rhythm.
Midfielders Bruno Guimarães and Lucas Paquetá controlled possession while Rayan and Matheus Cunha constantly harassed Scotland’s defenders.
Vinícius Júnior enjoyed the freedom to attack wide areas, repeatedly exposing Scotland’s defensive weaknesses.
Ancelotti praised the team’s collective effort after the match.
“We played well. We replicated our performance against Haiti, which was the goal. It was a more complete game. We’re satisfied. Now it’s time for the beautiful part.”
Neymar Brazil Return steals the headlines
Although Brazil had already secured victory, the biggest moment came with just under 15 minutes remaining.
The fourth official raised the substitution board and displayed the famous number 10.
After 981 days away from international football, Neymar returned to represent Brazil.
The Miami Stadium erupted.
Matheus Cunha embraced the Brazilian icon before Neymar kissed the pitch and pointed toward the sky as thousands of supporters welcomed him back.
Although he played only around 20 minutes and did not score, Neymar showed flashes of his extraordinary talent.
He attempted several trademark dribbles, nearly created an assist for Vinícius Júnior and even tested goalkeeper Angus Gunn with a powerful strike.
After the game Neymar said:
“I’m happy to be back wearing the Brazil shirt again after three years. I feel good physically. I’ve worked hard to return and I’m very satisfied.”
Vinícius Júnior continues incredible World Cup form
If Neymar’s return lifted the crowd emotionally, Vinícius Júnior continues to carry Brazil on the pitch.
The Real Madrid winger has now scored in every group-stage match.
His performances have placed him alongside Brazilian legends Jairzinho, Romário, Ronaldo and Rivaldo as only the fifth Brazilian player to score in all three group matches at a FIFA World Cup.
Even more impressive is his transformation under Carlo Ancelotti.
Before Ancelotti’s appointment, Vinícius had scored just six goals in 39 appearances for Brazil.
Since the Italian coach arrived, he has netted seven goals in only 13 matches.
Ancelotti praised his winger after another outstanding display.
“He’s one of the best players in the world. He loves playing for Brazil and he’s doing a brilliant job.”
Scotland struggle against Brazil’s relentless pressure
Scotland entered the match hoping to secure qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
Instead, they struggled to cope with Brazil’s intensity.
Defensive errors gifted Brazil their opening two goals, while the midfield failed to maintain possession under constant pressure.
Steve Clarke introduced Kieran Tierney during halftime in an attempt to change the game.
Scott McTominay produced Scotland’s best opportunity with a powerful header, but Alisson Becker comfortably made the save.
Moments later Brazil punished Scotland once again.
Bruno Guimarães overpowered Kenny McLean before Matheus Cunha calmly finished to make it 3-0 after 60 minutes.
Despite creating a few late opportunities, Scotland never seriously threatened Brazil’s lead.
Brazil building momentum before knockout stage
Brazil have improved dramatically after opening the tournament with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Morocco.
Since then they have defeated Haiti 3-0 and Scotland 3-0 while keeping consecutive clean sheets.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker believes confidence is growing throughout the squad.
“We’ve improved. We’re defending well and scoring goals. That gives everyone confidence. Now we need to keep getting better.”
The Seleção now advance to the Round of 32 where they are expected to face the runners-up from Group F, potentially Japan or the Netherlands.

Brazil look ready for another deep World Cup run
Brazil’s combination of experienced leaders and emerging stars makes them one of the tournament favourites.
Vinícius Júnior continues to lead the attack with confidence, Bruno Guimarães dominates midfield, and Alisson provides stability at the back.
Most importantly, Neymar’s return adds another creative dimension that few teams can match.
While questions remain about whether the veteran forward can regain full match fitness, simply having him available boosts Brazil’s chances of lifting a sixth World Cup title.
The chemistry developing under Carlo Ancelotti suggests Brazil are peaking at exactly the right moment.
With two consecutive clean sheets, six unanswered goals, and confidence growing inside the squad, the Seleção head into the knockout rounds looking every bit like genuine championship contenders.
If Vinícius maintains his sensational form and Neymar continues progressing physically, Brazil could once again become the team every nation wants to avoid in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages.
