Durban City rally to share spoils with Richards Bay as AmaZulu brush aside Siwelele FC
Amazulu defeat Siwelele by 2-0 in to rally Richards Bay after AmaZulu FC continued their unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Siwelele FC at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday.
The result strengthened AmaZulu’s position near the top of the standings and extended their encouraging start to the campaign.
The KwaZulu-Natal side were clinical when opportunities arrived, scoring twice before half-time through Mlondi Mbanjwa and Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.
While the focus was on AmaZulu’s impressive victory, Durban City and Richards Bay also shared the points in another KwaZulu-Natal derby on Saturday evening.
AmaZulu FC maintain unbeaten start
AmaZulu FC entered the match looking to build on their positive opening to the campaign, and Arthur Zwane’s side delivered another composed performance.
Although Siwelele enjoyed spells of possession, AmaZulu were more efficient in the final third.
The hosts showed patience before creating the opportunities that ultimately decided the contest.
Their first goal arrived in the 20th minute after Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya provided an assist for Mlondi Mbanjwa.
Mbanjwa finished the opportunity to give AmaZulu a 1-0 advantage and score his first goal of the season.
The breakthrough gave AmaZulu greater confidence and forced Siwelele to take more risks as they searched for an equaliser.
However, those efforts left gaps that AmaZulu were able to exploit.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continues excellent form
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continued his impressive form by turning from provider into goalscorer.
The striker doubled AmaZulu’s advantage in the 32nd minute after receiving a pass from Nkosikhona Radebe.
Ngwenya kept his composure to finish clinically and make it 2-0.
The goal was particularly significant because it continued his strong run of form at the beginning of the season.
Ngwenya has quickly established himself as one of AmaZulu’s biggest attacking threats and his goals have played an important role in the club’s rise up the early table.
The forward’s combination of movement, finishing and confidence has given Zwane another valuable option in attack.
AmaZulu went into half-time with a two-goal advantage and appeared firmly in control.
Siwelele struggle to find a response
Siwelele coach Lehlohonolo Seema attempted to change the course of the game after the interval.
Blessing Thulo and Neo Mokhachane were introduced as Siwelele attempted to increase their attacking threat.
The visitors needed an early second-half goal to create pressure on AmaZulu, but the hosts remained organised.
Siwelele moved the ball forward more aggressively, but the final pass and finishing lacked the quality required to beat the AmaZulu defence.
AmaZulu goalkeeper Wilfried Kouassi also played an important role.
The goalkeeper made five saves during the second half, frustrating Siwelele whenever they managed to get into promising positions.
His performance ensured that AmaZulu maintained their clean sheet and comfortably protected their two-goal lead.
Betway Premiership table takes shape
The victory has strengthened AmaZulu’s position in the Betway Premiership standings.
The three points lifted Usuthu into second place, level on points with leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
The early league table remains closely contested, but AmaZulu have given themselves an excellent platform for the rest of the campaign.
Their unbeaten record will also provide confidence as they prepare for more difficult fixtures.
The next major test will come when AmaZulu travel to face Mamelodi Sundowns on 26 August.
That match will provide a clearer indication of how strongly Zwane’s team can compete against one of the country’s leading clubs.
Richards Bay and Durban City share points
While AmaZulu celebrated in Durban, Richards Bay were involved in another dramatic KwaZulu-Natal derby against Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday night.
Richards Bay made the stronger start and went ahead in the ninth minute through Aqaba Xulu.
Xulu capitalised on a defensive error before producing a composed finish to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Durban City had opportunities to respond but struggled with their finishing.
Gaston Sirino created several attacking moments, while Thabo Nodada and Tashreeq Morris also had opportunities to score.
Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno made important saves to preserve his side’s advantage.
However, Durban City eventually found an equaliser after Luphumlo Sifumba’s cross took an unexpected trajectory and was turned into his own net by Thembela Sikhakhane in the 69th minute.
Neither side could find a winner after that.
The 1-1 draw means both Durban City and Richards Bay are still searching for their first league victory of the season.
Durban City still looking for first win
Durban City have experienced a difficult start in front of goal.
The Citizens had failed to score in their opening two league matches and again struggled to convert chances against Richards Bay.
Their inability to finish opportunities has become a concern, particularly because they have shown that they can create openings.
Sirino remains an important attacking figure, but City will need more consistency from their forwards if they are to climb the standings.
The draw at least provided a point and demonstrated their ability to recover after falling behind.
Their next matches will be important as coach Khalil Ben Youssef looks for a way to turn promising passages of play into victories.
AmaZulu’s attacking efficiency makes difference
The contrast between the two KwaZulu-Natal matches was clear.
AmaZulu created fewer opportunities than Siwelele in some phases but were far more clinical when chances arrived.
Mbanjwa’s opener and Ngwenya’s second goal gave them control before half-time.
By comparison, Durban City’s poor finishing against Richards Bay prevented them from taking all three points.
This difference in efficiency could prove significant over the course of the season.
Teams competing for the top positions need to convert chances consistently, while sides battling near the bottom cannot afford to waste opportunities.
What happens next?
AmaZulu will now prepare for their trip to face Mamelodi Sundowns on 26 August.
The fixture will be a major test of their early-season form and could provide another indication of whether Usuthu can remain among the leading teams.
Siwelele remain at the bottom of the table with one point from three matches.
They will host Chippa United on 25 August, with the goal of securing their first win of the campaign.
Richards Bay will also look for their first league victory when their next fixture arrives, while Durban City will be desperate to turn their competitive performances into three points.
The early stages of the season have already produced plenty of drama in the Betway Premiership.
