BREAKING | ‘Cat’ Matlala’s wife arrested on fraud charges
BREAKING | ‘Cat’ Matlala’s wife arrested on fraud charges as police in Gauteng investigate allegations involving fraudulent documents and property transactions.
Tsakane Matlala, the wife of businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, was arrested on Tuesday morning together with three other suspects in connection with a fraud and corruption-related investigation.
According to police, the suspects were arrested in different parts of Gauteng and are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the investigation relates to allegations that properties were acquired using fraudulent documentation.
The arrests add another development to the ongoing legal matters involving the Matlala family and come as authorities continue investigating allegations linked to fraudulent agreements and documentation.
Tsakane Matlala arrested in Gauteng
The arrest of Tsakane Matlala arrested became one of the latest developments in the investigation after police took her into custody on Tuesday morning.
Police said four suspects were arrested in different parts of Gauteng as part of the investigation.
Mathe confirmed that the suspects are facing a number of charges and are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
“It is alleged they acquired various properties across Gauteng utilising fraudulent documents,” Mathe said.
The police statement indicates that investigators are examining how documentation was allegedly used in transactions involving properties.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the full value of the properties allegedly involved, nor have they provided all the details surrounding the documents being investigated.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Vusimuzi Cat Matlala linked to wider investigations
The arrest has also drawn attention to Vusimuzi Cat Matlala, who is involved in separate criminal proceedings.
Matlala is facing various legal proceedings, including a case involving allegations arising from an attempted murder matter. Tsakane Matlala is also a co-accused in that separate case.
The couple’s names have previously featured prominently in investigations involving business dealings, police contracts and alleged criminal activity.
However, allegations made in ongoing investigations and criminal cases have not necessarily been proven in court.
In a separate matter, the National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is facing corruption-related proceedings linked to the Medicare 24 Tshwane District contract.
The NPA said the case involves allegations surrounding the irregular awarding of a contract valued at approximately R228 million. Matlala and his companies are expected to be joined with other accused in proceedings before the Pretoria courts.
The separate proceedings should not be confused with the latest fraud investigation involving Tsakane Matlala and the other suspects.
Fraud charges under investigation
The fraud charges involving Tsakane Matlala and the three other suspects are connected to allegations surrounding fraudulent documentation.
Police have indicated that investigators are examining claims that documents were allegedly used to facilitate the acquisition of properties across Gauteng.
Fraud investigations involving property transactions can involve multiple parties, including applicants, intermediaries, property owners and other individuals responsible for preparing or submitting documentation.
At this stage, police have not publicly detailed the precise role allegedly played by each of the four suspects.
The fact that a person has been arrested does not mean that person has been convicted. The allegations will have to be tested through the criminal justice process.
The suspects are expected to have an opportunity to respond to the allegations when they appear in court.
Investigators may also provide additional information as the case progresses.
Fraudulent lease agreement under investigation
One of the key elements of the investigation is a fraudulent lease agreement.
Police previously arrested another suspect in connection with the alleged agreement, with Tsakane Matlala reportedly becoming the second person arrested in relation to the lease investigation.
The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects taken into custody in the matter to four.
Details surrounding the lease, including its financial value and the specific property involved, have not been fully disclosed by investigators.
An associate of Matlala was also arrested separately in Pretoria on Tuesday in connection with allegations involving falsified bank statements and a lease agreement. According to eNCA, the investigation relates to an alleged R95,000 lease agreement and claims that bank statements were falsified to assist Matlala in securing the lease.
That investigation provides additional context to the authorities’ interest in documentation and lease arrangements linked to Matlala, although each criminal allegation remains subject to investigation and due legal process.
Pretoria Magistrate’s Court appearance expected
The four suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Their court appearance is expected to provide more information about the charges they face and the State’s case at this stage.
The court could also deal with issues such as bail, possible further investigations and the next steps in the matter.
It remains unclear whether prosecutors will oppose bail for any of the accused or whether additional charges could be added as investigators continue their work.
The police have not disclosed whether more arrests are expected.
A court appearance does not constitute a finding of guilt. The State will be required to present evidence supporting its allegations, while the accused remain entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Police continue investigation
The latest arrests demonstrate that investigators are continuing to examine allegations involving documentation, property transactions and lease agreements.
For the police, establishing how allegedly fraudulent documents were created, submitted or used will likely be an important part of the investigation.
Investigators may also need to determine whether the suspects acted individually or whether there was a broader arrangement involving other people.
The identities and roles of the three other suspects arrested alongside Tsakane Matlala have not been fully detailed in the information released publicly.
Police have also not disclosed the total financial value of the properties allegedly acquired using fraudulent documentation.
Further details could emerge during the court proceedings and as investigators continue gathering evidence.
The investigation comes against the backdrop of several ongoing legal matters involving Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed earlier this month that Matlala’s Medicare 24-related corruption case is scheduled for further proceedings in September. The NPA said Matlala and his two companies are expected to be joined with other accused in the matter.

What happens next?
The Wednesday appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court is expected to provide the first formal indication of how prosecutors intend to proceed against the four suspects.
The court process could clarify the charges, the allegations contained in the case docket and whether the State intends opposing bail.
For now, police investigations remain ongoing.
The fraud charges against Tsakane Matlala and the other suspects remain allegations until they are tested in court.
eKayNews will continue following developments in the case as more information becomes available from the police, prosecutors and the courts.
