Kaizer Chiefs held to goalless draw by Golden Arrows
Kaizer Chiefs held to goalless draw by Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, with both teams settling for a point after a tense 0-0 encounter in the Betway Premiership.
The result extended Chiefs’ run of draws and left them fourth on the 2026/27 Betway Premiership table with 13 points from seven matches. Golden Arrows remained eighth with eight points after recording their fifth league draw of the campaign.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the result was another frustrating afternoon in front of goal. The Soweto club had a clear opportunity to take control of the match when they were awarded a penalty in the first half, but Golden Arrows goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa produced an important save to deny Lebohang Maboe.
Chiefs eventually hit the crossbar late in the match, while Golden Arrows also had opportunities to claim all three points in the closing stages.
Kaizer Chiefs struggle to find a breakthrough
Kaizer Chiefs dominate early stages
Kaizer Chiefs started brightly and looked to take control from the opening minutes. Their attacking players used pace on both flanks, with Faiz Abrahams, Mfundo Vilakazi and Pule Mmodi looking to create openings against the Golden Arrows defence.
The hosts also had an early opportunity when Junior Dion met a dangerous delivery from Philani Kumalo. However, Chiefs goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner reacted quickly to make an important reflex save.
Leaner was making his debut for Kaizer Chiefs after coming into the starting line-up in place of injured captain Brandon Petersen. His early intervention ensured that Golden Arrows could not take advantage of their first clear opportunity.
Golden Arrows created another opening in the 21st minute when Sabelo Sithole delivered from the left. Dion was positioned well but could not make sufficient contact with the ball.
The early exchanges demonstrated that both teams were capable of threatening in attack, although Chiefs enjoyed greater control during much of the opening period.
Lebohang Maboe penalty saved by Thakasani Mbanjwa
Thakasani Mbanjwa becomes the difference-maker
The biggest opportunity of the first half arrived in the 33rd minute.
Faiz Abrahams was brought down inside the Golden Arrows penalty area by Ntandoyenkosi Mabaso, resulting in a penalty for Kaizer Chiefs. Lebohang Maboe stepped forward to take responsibility from the spot.
Maboe struck the penalty firmly, but Thakasani Mbanjwa produced an excellent diving save to keep Golden Arrows level.
The save proved particularly important because Chiefs were unable to convert their territorial advantage into a goal. Mbanjwa’s performance continued to frustrate the Amakhosi throughout the match.
The penalty miss also meant that Golden Arrows went into the interval level despite spending long periods under pressure.
For Chiefs, the missed opportunity became one of the defining moments of the match.
Golden Arrows remain dangerous on the counter
Golden Arrows create chances after the break
The second half became more competitive as Golden Arrows grew into the contest.
Chiefs continued searching for a goal, but Arrows became increasingly dangerous when they won possession and attacked on the counter.
Nqubeko Dlamini headed over the crossbar before Ayabulela Maxwele found Osborn Maluleke in a promising position. However, Maluleke could not direct his effort towards the target.
Chiefs responded by making attacking changes in the 60th minute, with Mduduzi Shabalala and Adolf Mtasingwa introduced as the Amakhosi looked for additional creativity and attacking energy.
The changes helped Chiefs sustain pressure in the Golden Arrows half, but the home side’s defence remained organised.
Mbanjwa continued to provide confidence behind the defence, while his teammates worked to limit the space available to Chiefs’ attackers.
Chiefs hit the crossbar late in the match
Mfundo Vilakazi comes closest to breaking the deadlock
Kaizer Chiefs came agonisingly close to finally finding the breakthrough in the 79th minute.
Asanele Velebayi delivered a cross towards Mfundo Vilakazi, who met the ball with a powerful volley. The effort beat Mbanjwa but struck the crossbar before bouncing away.
It was the clearest late opportunity for Chiefs and summed up their afternoon: they created openings but could not find the finishing touch.
Pule Mmodi also came close after Shabalala delivered a cross into the area. Mmodi’s header flashed across goal, but no Chiefs player was positioned to turn the opportunity into a winning goal.
The match therefore remained goalless as the clock moved into stoppage time.
Golden Arrows nearly snatch victory
Thokozani Khumalo misses late chance
Golden Arrows had the final major opportunity of the match.
Ronaldo Van Neel delivered a cross into the penalty area, finding Thokozani Khumalo in front of goal. Khumalo had an opportunity to secure all three points for Arrows but dragged his effort wide.
The miss ensured that the match ended 0-0, with both sides taking a point.
The result represented Chiefs’ fourth draw of the season and their second successive goalless draw. Reports also noted that Chiefs had drawn four of their last five matches.
For Golden Arrows, the point maintained their position in eighth place and continued their run of league stalemates.

What comes next for Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows?
Kaizer Chiefs will now turn their attention to their next Betway Premiership fixture against Stellenbosch FC in October. The international break gives the Amakhosi an opportunity to work on their attacking play before returning to league action.
Chiefs remain unbeaten after seven league matches, with three victories and four draws. However, their inability to turn promising performances into victories has become a notable feature of their campaign. The club’s official match report confirmed that Chiefs remain fourth with 13 points after the stalemate.
Golden Arrows, meanwhile, will host Milford in their next league assignment. Their defensive organisation at Mbombela Stadium will provide encouragement after they successfully kept Chiefs out despite conceding a penalty and facing sustained pressure during parts of the match.
The 0-0 result ultimately reflected a match in which both teams had opportunities but neither could produce the decisive finish.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the focus will be on converting their chances into goals when the Betway Premiership resumes. For Golden Arrows, maintaining their defensive discipline while becoming more clinical in attack will be central to their efforts to climb the standings.
Kaizer Chiefs held to goalless draw by Golden Arrows was therefore a result shaped by missed opportunities, strong goalkeeping and determined defending, leaving both clubs with a single point from a closely contested encounter.
