Pirates held to 1-1 draw by Siwelele in title race blow
Pirates held to 1-1 draw by Siwelele in title race blow as Orlando Pirates saw their Betway Premiership title ambitions suffer a setback after dropping two valuable points in Soweto on 14 March 2026, Saturday.
The Buccaneers were forced to come from behind to salvage a point against Siwelele FC in a dramatic encounter at the Orlando Stadium. The match ended 1-1 after an impressive goalkeeping performance from Ricardo Goss, who produced a series of outstanding saves to frustrate the league leaders.
Despite dominating large parts of the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Pirates could not secure the victory they desperately needed to strengthen their position at the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
Orlando Pirates drop valuable points in title race
The result leaves Orlando Pirates with 48 points after 21 matches. However, their lead at the summit is now under serious threat, as second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns trail by just one point with a game in hand.
The dropped points represent a significant blow for the Buccaneers, who had hoped to extend their advantage in the tightly contested title race.
Supporters expressed frustration after the match, with some criticising the coaching staff for inconsistent team selections and questioning goalkeeper Sipho Chaine’s time-management tactics during the closing stages of the game.
Vincent Pule punishes former club
Siwelele FC stunned the home crowd by taking the lead against the run of play in the 30th minute. After Pirates lost possession in midfield, Tebogo Potsane quickly launched a counterattack. The ball found Vincent Pule, the former Orlando Pirates winger, who calmly struck a powerful shot into the bottom-right corner past Chaine.
The goal silenced the partisan Soweto crowd and gave Siwelele a surprising 1-0 lead at half-time, despite Pirates dominating possession and creating several clear chances. Pule’s goal was particularly painful for the Buccaneers, given his history with the club and the timing of the strike during a period when Pirates were firmly in control of the match.
Ricardo Goss delivers heroic performance
If there was one standout player in the match, it was Ricardo Goss. The Siwelele FC captain and goalkeeper delivered a phenomenal performance, making 11 crucial saves throughout the game to keep his side in contention.
Early in the match, Goss denied several Pirates attacks, including an acrobatic punch to stop a dangerous attempt from Kamogelo Sebelebele. Moments later, he produced another brilliant stop to deny a header from Seema following a corner delivered by Relebohile Mofokeng.
Pirates continued to pile on pressure, but Goss remained composed and alert between the posts. His outstanding reflexes repeatedly denied players such as Oswin Appollis, Evidence Makgopa, and Tshepang Moremi as the Buccaneers searched desperately for a winner.
Moremi rescues Pirates after halftime
Pirates eventually found their breakthrough shortly after the restart. In the 51st minute, Kabelo Mbatha delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area, allowing Tshepang Moremi to sprint onto the ball and finish confidently past Goss at the near post.
The equaliser reignited the home crowd and gave Pirates renewed belief that they could still claim all three points. Moremi nearly scored again minutes later, but once again Ricardo Goss produced a brilliant save to deny him.
Pirates squander chances to win
As the match progressed, Pirates created several promising opportunities but struggled to convert them into goals. In the 67th minute, a quick counterattack left Pirates with a two-on-one situation. Moremi squared the ball to substitute Evidence Makgopa, but the striker blasted his effort over the crossbar.
Another golden opportunity arrived in the 71st minute when Makgopa intercepted a pass from Goss and set up Moremi for what seemed like a certain goal. However, the Siwelele goalkeeper reacted quickly to recover his position and make yet another crucial save.
Late in the game, Patrick Maswanganyi delivered a perfect cross to Relebohile Mofokeng, but the young forward could not generate enough power with his header to trouble Goss. Despite relentless pressure in the final minutes, Pirates could not find the winning goal.
Siwelele extend draw streak
For Siwelele FC, the result represents their sixth draw in the last eight league matches.
While the Bloemfontein side may have hoped for all three points, the draw is still a valuable result away from home against the league leaders. They currently sit 11th in the standings, five points above the relegation zone, and the performance against Pirates will boost confidence heading into their next fixture.
Other Betway Premiership results
Elsewhere in the Betway Premiership, several other matches took place on Saturday afternoon. Golden Arrows secured an impressive 2-1 away victory over Marumo Gallants, who were reduced to ten men during the match.
Meanwhile, bottom-of-the-table Magesi FC played to a 2-2 draw with Chippa United, earning a crucial point in their fight to avoid relegation.
