US demands accountability after SA arrests Kenyans processing Afrikaner ‘refugees’
US demands accountability after SA arrests Kenyans processing Afrikaner ‘refugees’, escalating a diplomatic standoff that has been simmering between Washington and Pretoria for nearly a year. The United States government has formally declared that it “expects full cooperation and accountability” from South African authorities following the detention and subsequent deportation of seven Kenyan nationals. These individuals were reportedly key personnel in the administration of the Trump White House’s controversial new refugee program.
The diplomatic row intensified sharply on Tuesday (16 December) when the US State Department broke its silence. Speaking to CNN, US State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott issued a stern warning, stating that the US government is “seeking immediate clarification from the South African government.”
“We’ll have more to say once all the facts are confirmed, but the Trump administration will always stand up for US interests, US personnel and the rule of law. Interfering in our refugee operations is unacceptable,” Pigott reportedly said.
South Africa arrests Kenyans amidst diplomatic relations tension
The incident that triggered this latest volley of diplomatic relations tension occurred in Johannesburg earlier this week. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) executed what it termed a “routine, lawful operation” targeted at a centre affiliated with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
While the US views this as interference, Pretoria sees it as a clear-cut case of law enforcement. South Africa arrests Kenyans who were found working at the facility without the necessary documentation. The DHA confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that “intelligence reports” had flagged the presence of foreign nationals violating the conditions of their stay.
According to the department, the seven Kenyan nationals had recently entered South Africa on tourist visas. However, instead of holidaying, they were allegedly employed at the centre, processing sensitive Afrikaner refugee applications. This activity is a direct contravention of South Africa’s Immigration Act, which strictly prohibits employment for holders of tourist visas.
“This was despite the fact that earlier visa applications for Kenyan nationals to perform this work had been lawfully declined by the department,” the DHA added. By bypassing the official rejection and deploying the workers on tourist visas regardless, the operators of the centre seemingly invited the crackdown.
Tourist visa violations lead to deportation
The Department of Home Affairs was unyielding in its application of the law regarding tourist visa violations. Upon discovering the individuals working at the centre, officials moved swiftly. Engaging in work while in possession of a tourist visa was cited as being “in clear violation of their conditions of entry into the country.”
Consequently, the DHA arrested the seven individuals and issued them with immediate deportation orders. To further underscore the severity of the offense, the department announced that the group will be prohibited from re-entering South Africa for a period of five years. This “undesirable” status is a standard penalty for visa overstays and violations, yet its application in a case involving a superpower’s interests sends a powerful message.
Home Affairs was careful to clarify the limits of the operation to avoid further inflammation. “No US officials were arrested in the process, the operation was not conducted at a diplomatic site, and no members of the public or prospective ‘refugees’ were harassed,” the DHA emphasised.

Afrikaner refugee applications at center of dispute
The root cause of this friction is the Afrikaner refugee applications programme itself. Initiated by President Donald Trump in February, the programme designates white South Africans (Afrikaners) as a priority group for refugee resettlement in the United States. South Africa has vehemently disputed the premise of this policy, rejecting the designation of Afrikaners as “refugees” and denying allegations of state-sponsored persecution.
However, Washington has forged ahead. The deployment of Kenyan staff to Johannesburg appears to have been a logistical workaround to process the anticipated volume of applications after local visa avenues were blocked.
“The presence of foreign officials apparently coordinating with undocumented workers naturally raises serious questions about intent and diplomatic protocol,” the DHA stated.
In response to these “serious questions,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has initiated formal diplomatic engagements with both the United States and Kenya. These high-level talks aim to resolve the immediate crisis, but the broader ideological chasm remains.
The incident is likely to worsen already frayed relations. The Trump administration has already taken punitive measures, such as barring South Africa from participating in G20 meetings—a significant blow to the country’s international standing. As the US demands accountability after SA arrests Kenyans processing Afrikaner ‘refugees’, the path to normalization seems increasingly difficult.
