Chiefs beat Sekhukhune United to move top of Betway Premiership
Chiefs beat Sekhukhune United to move top of Betway Premiership after securing a second consecutive league victory with a composed 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result gives Kaizer Chiefs six points from their opening two Betway Premiership matches and puts the Soweto giants at the summit of the early league standings.
After suffering disappointment in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Golden Arrows, Chiefs needed a positive response. They delivered exactly that, although they had to wait until the second half to break down a stubborn Sekhukhune United defence.
Luke Baartman opened the scoring in the 63rd minute before Mduduzi Shabalala sealed the victory with six minutes of normal time remaining.
Kaizer Chiefs make strong league start
The victory means Kaizer Chiefs have won both of their opening Betway Premiership fixtures this season.
The Glamour Boys began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over newly promoted Kruger United before following that up with another three points against Sekhukhune.
That perfect start has provided an important boost for Fernando Da Cruz and his squad, particularly after their early MTN8 exit.
Chiefs were eliminated from the competition by Golden Arrows in a 1-0 defeat, but their focus quickly shifted back to league football.
The victory over Sekhukhune showed that Chiefs were capable of putting that setback behind them and maintaining their momentum in the league.
With six points collected from two matches, Amakhosi have immediately placed themselves among the early contenders for the Betway Premiership title.
Sekhukhune United frustrate Chiefs
The opening half at FNB Stadium was far from a classic.
Sekhukhune United were organised defensively and made life difficult for their hosts, while Chiefs struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities.
Chiefs largely controlled the ball but lacked the cutting edge needed to seriously trouble Toaster Nsabata in the Sekhukhune goal.
Lebohang Maboe produced one of the better opportunities of the opening period when he tested Nsabata from distance, but the goalkeeper dealt comfortably with the effort.
The visitors also showed discipline when defending Chiefs’ attacks, preventing the home side from creating the kind of chances that could have changed the game before the interval.
The teams went into half-time level at 0-0.
For Chiefs, the second half offered an opportunity to increase the tempo and make their possession count.
Luke Baartman breaks the deadlock
Chiefs returned from the interval with greater attacking intent.
Langelihle Phili tested Nsabata with a long-range effort in the 53rd minute, forcing the Sekhukhune goalkeeper to make a save.
The pressure gradually increased, and Chiefs eventually found their breakthrough in the 63rd minute.
The goal came after Dillon Solomons combined effectively with Phili before delivering a dangerous ball into the area.
Luke Baartman was in the right position and needed only one touch to guide the ball into the back of the net.
The goal changed the complexion of the match.
Sekhukhune were suddenly forced to chase the game, while Chiefs had more space to exploit on the counterattack.
For Baartman, the goal was another encouraging moment as he continues to establish himself as an important attacking option for the Soweto club.
Mduduzi Shabalala seals the victory
Sekhukhune United almost responded immediately after falling behind.
A dangerous opportunity fell to Mcedi Vandala, but Dillon Solomons made an important defensive intervention to prevent the visitors from finding an equaliser.
Sekhukhune continued searching for a way back into the match and introduced additional attacking players.
Lehlohonolo Mojela came close to scoring with a close-range volley late in the contest, but his effort went straight at Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
That missed opportunity proved costly.
Chiefs eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 84th minute.
A superb threaded pass from Siphesihle Ndlovu found substitute Mduduzi Shabalala inside a dangerous position.
Shabalala kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing Nsabata to make it 2-0.
The goal effectively ended Sekhukhune’s hopes of taking anything from the match.
Betway Premiership table takes shape
The 2-0 victory means Chiefs now have six points from two matches.
Although the season is still in its early stages, moving to the top of the Betway Premiership table will give the club confidence.
The challenge now will be maintaining that consistency throughout a long campaign.
Chiefs have shown that they can win even when they are not at their best, which is often an important characteristic of teams competing for major honours.
The Soweto giants will also be encouraged by the fact that they have already responded positively to setbacks.
Their MTN8 defeat could have affected their confidence, but the victories over Sekhukhune and Kruger United suggest that the squad remains focused on its league campaign.
Langelihle Phili impresses on Chiefs debut
One of the positives from the match was the contribution of Langelihle Phili.
The attacker played an important role in Chiefs’ attacking build-up and was involved in the move that resulted in Baartman’s opening goal.
Phili was also recognised as the Man-of-the-Match for his contribution.
Speaking after the game, he expressed his happiness at helping Chiefs secure another victory.
The player also described representing Kaizer Chiefs as an honour and privilege after making the move from Stellenbosch.
His performances will be closely watched as the season develops, particularly as Chiefs look to build greater attacking depth.
Chiefs face pressure to maintain momentum
While the early league position is encouraging, Chiefs know that the season is still a long way from being decided.
The team must now turn its strong opening into sustained consistency.
The likes of Baartman, Shabalala and Phili will be expected to continue contributing in the final third, while the defence will need to maintain its discipline.
The victory over Sekhukhune also highlighted the importance of squad depth.
Chiefs were able to introduce Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi during the second half, while other players provided energy as the match progressed.
That ability to change the game from the bench could become increasingly important as fixtures begin to pile up.

What comes next for Kaizer Chiefs?
Chiefs’ attention now turns to their next Betway Premiership challenge as they look to protect their position at the top of the table.
Mamelodi Sundowns are among the teams expected to challenge for the leading positions, meaning the early advantage could change quickly as more fixtures are played.
For now, however, Chiefs beat Sekhukhune United to move top of Betway Premiership, giving Amakhosi supporters plenty of reasons for optimism.
The 2-0 victory was not necessarily a spectacular performance, but it was an effective one.
Baartman’s breakthrough goal gave Chiefs the platform, while Shabalala’s late strike secured the points.
With six points from two matches, Kaizer Chiefs have made a confident start to their league campaign. The real test will be whether Fernando Da Cruz’s side can maintain that winning mentality when the pressure increases and the race for the Betway Premiership title becomes more intense.
