Inside Walmart’s first South African store
Inside Walmart’s first South African store, a new era of retail officially begins as the global giant plants its flag in Johannesburg. MyBroadband got an exclusive early look at the groundbreaking facility at the Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort on Thursday, 20 November 2025. This launch marks a pivotal moment in the local market, as the world’s largest retailer moves from operating behind the scenes of Massmart to placing its iconic blue branding front and center.
The store, which boasts roughly 3,500 square metres of trading space, is a vibrant addition to the local retail landscape. It employs 86 staff members, all led by store manager Onicca Mothapo, who expressed pride in leading this historic opening. The atmosphere during the preview was electric, signaling a direct challenge to local competitors like Checkers and Pick n Pay.
Walmart South Africa launches at Clearwater Mall
The arrival of Walmart South Africa is not just a rebranding exercise; it is a strategic overhaul of how retail is conducted in the country. At the start of the tour, Walmart Africa chief operating officer Dries D’hooge emphasized that the retailer’s local strategy is tightly aligned with its global vision: improving customers’ lives by saving them money.
The Clearwater Mall outlet is the first of two stores in Gauteng scheduled to open this year, with the second location confirmed for Fourways Mall. While these first two stores have replaced former Game outlets, D’hooge clarified that this was a pragmatic decision to get operations up and running quickly rather than a signal that the Game brand is disappearing entirely.
He emphasized that other brands under Walmart’s wholly-owned Massmart subsidiary—Makro, Game, and Builders—will remain operational, as they cater to distinct market segments. However, the introduction of the Walmart banner brings a unique value proposition that blends international sourcing power with local relevance.
Every Day Low Prices strategy

A core component of the tour was the demonstration of Walmart’s famous philosophy. To illustrate the retailer’s serious focus on Every Day Low Prices (EDLP), D’Hooge presented a practical experiment. He asked staff to shop for an assortment of popular monthly food and grocery items from Walmart’s new shelves and compare them against two major competing retailers.
The results were compelling:
-
Walmart Basket: R1,680 (Everyday price, no special promotions needed)
-
Competitor A: R1,713 (With promotions included)
-
Competitor B: R1,868 (With promotions included)
On Wednesday, Walmart’s everyday price for all the items was significantly cheaper. D’Hooge explained that Walmart South Africa leverages global scale, vast product selection, and modern technology to drive these costs down. Unlike local competitors that rely heavily on “high-low” pricing (high regular prices with deep sporadic discounts), Walmart offers consistent value.
We got to walk around the store ourselves and were impressed with the store’s low prices on many products. As repeatedly promised, the store was well-lit, with wide aisles and clear signage to help customers find products effortlessly. The logical layout guided shoppers through diverse categories, including fresh and frozen foods, cleaning supplies, general groceries, beauty and health, entertainment, toys, sports and outdoor gear, clothing, and homeware.
Targeting the South African Consumer
Although Walmart will initially focus on the middle-class and higher-income markets—typical of the Clearwater Mall demographic—the management team believes the EDLP strategy will eventually appeal to lower-income customers as well. In an economic climate where South Africans are under immense financial pressure, the promise of a basket that is consistently cheaper without needing a loyalty card or special coupons is a powerful draw.
The store’s design reflects this dual appeal. It feels premium and modern but is aggressively priced. From bulk packs of pantry staples to exclusive imported electronics and toys, the merchandise mix is designed to stop shoppers from needing to visit multiple stores to complete their weekly shop.
Grocery delivery and mobile app integration

In addition to the physical store, the launch features a significant digital component. Grocery delivery is set to be a major battleground, and Walmart is entering the fray immediately.
Walmart’s new mobile app for South Africa will launch on the same day as the store opening—Saturday, 22 November 2025. This app offers customers the ability to shop from stores and distribution facilities at the exact same prices found in-store, a transparency that is often lacking in online retail.
Key features of the new service include:
-
Hyper-local Speed: Customers living within a 5km radius of the store can get grocery delivery of their items within 60 minutes.
-
Wider Access: Those who do not yet have Walmart delivery coverage in their immediate area can still browse the app’s product selection to plan their in-store visits.
This rapid delivery service places Walmart in direct competition with existing heavyweights like Checkers Sixty60 and Pick n Pay asap!, but with the added advantage of the Walmart global tech stack.

Grand Opening Details
The excitement is building for the public launch. The Clearwater Mall Walmart will officially open its doors to the public at 08:00 on Saturday, 22 November 2025. D’Hooge promised that the grand opening will be an event to remember, featuring special offers, competitions, and fun activities for families.
Dries D’hooge would not say exactly how many stores Walmart planned to roll out in South Africa across the next few years, but he assured the media that the number was “ambitious.” For now, all eyes are on Roodepoort to see if the American retail giant can truly disrupt the local market.
As shoppers prepare to flood the aisles this weekend, one thing is clear: the arrival of Walmart brings a new level of competition to South Africa, and the ultimate winner will likely be the consumer.
