Julius Mkhwanazi claims ‘ jilted’ ex-lover fabricated gemstone theft story
Julius Mkhwanazi denies gemstone theft allegations after the suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, insisting that he had been falsely implicated in the alleged theft of precious stones worth nearly R15 million.
The high-profile case has attracted significant public attention because it involves senior law enforcement officials, allegations of fraud, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and claims that a former romantic partner fabricated evidence after their relationship ended.
Mkhwanazi maintains that he played no role in the alleged gemstone theft and insists that the accusations against him stem from a personal dispute rather than criminal conduct.
Julius Mkhwanazi says former partner fabricated allegations
The suspended police official claims that his former partner, identified in court documents as Witness K, falsely implicated him after their relationship came to an end.
According to an affidavit presented before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, Mkhwanazi alleges that Witness K became emotionally devastated after their breakup and subsequently created a false narrative linking him to the alleged crimes.
He argued that the allegations have no factual basis and were motivated by personal revenge rather than evidence.
In his affidavit, Mkhwanazi stated that the pair had been romantically involved during 2023 and had even discussed marriage before the relationship deteriorated.
He said he later realised the relationship was not meant to continue and decided to end it.
According to Mkhwanazi, this decision became the catalyst for the allegations now facing him.
Witness K testimony forms key part of prosecution
The Witness K testimony has become one of the central elements in the prosecution’s case.
Witness K previously appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she admitted involvement in the recovery of the gemstones and described how the operation unfolded.
She now faces charges alongside:
- Julius Mkhwanazi
- EMPD officer Adrian MacKenzie
- Former EMPD officer Kersha-Leigh Stohls
The accused all pleaded not guilty to charges linked to the alleged theft of precious stones from Rosebank during 2023.
The charges include:
- Fraud
- Robbery with aggravating circumstances
- Conspiracy
- Related criminal offences
The State alleges that those involved unlawfully seized valuable gemstones before portions of the collection were allegedly sold.
Precious stones theft allegations explained
The precious stones theft investigation centres on gemstones reportedly valued at approximately R14.9 million.
According to court documents, the stones were recovered during an operation at an apartment in Johannesburg.
Mkhwanazi acknowledged knowing about the operation but denied directing any criminal conduct.
Instead, he claimed that Witness K had informed him that fake gemstones were allegedly being sold to unsuspecting members of the public.
Because the alleged scam fell within law enforcement responsibilities, he said he instructed officers to investigate and recover the suspected fake stones.
He maintains that the operation was intended to stop fraud rather than facilitate theft.
Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief rejects mastermind claims
The suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief strongly rejected allegations that he orchestrated the theft or benefited financially from it.
According to Mkhwanazi, after briefly visiting officers involved in the operation, he left the area and played no further role.
He later learned that gemstones had been recovered and booked into police custody.
He argued that determining whether the stones were genuine or fake would always have depended on expert analysis conducted during the police investigation.
Mkhwanazi also denied allegations that he instructed anyone to sell the gemstones.
He rejected claims that he received any proceeds from the alleged sale.
According to his affidavit, he never arranged buyers, never handled the gemstones, and never received any payment connected to the recovered items.
Court hears details surrounding investigation
Proceedings before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court focused on the competing versions presented by the prosecution and the defence.
The State maintains that the accused unlawfully removed valuable gemstones and later attempted to profit from them.
Meanwhile, the defence argues that the allegations rely heavily on testimony from individuals who have their own legal interests in the matter.
The court will ultimately determine whether sufficient evidence exists to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
For now, all accused remain innocent unless proven guilty.
Witness K testimony and relationship history
One of the more unusual aspects of the case is the personal relationship between Mkhwanazi and Witness K.
In his affidavit, Mkhwanazi confirmed that they were romantically involved during 2023.
He stated that both believed the relationship could lead to marriage before it ended.
The defence argues that the breakdown of that relationship explains why Witness K later implicated him.
According to Mkhwanazi, the allegations only surfaced after the relationship had collapsed.
The prosecution, however, will rely on Witness K’s testimony together with other evidence presented during the trial.
Legal battle expected to continue
Legal experts expect the matter to continue over several court appearances as prosecutors present witness testimony and documentary evidence.
The case involves numerous accused persons, several serious criminal charges, and evidence that will likely be examined in detail.
Both the prosecution and defence are expected to call witnesses during the proceedings.
The court will assess the credibility of testimony, documentary records and other evidence before reaching any conclusions.
Public interest remains high
The case has generated widespread public interest because it involves a senior police official entrusted with enforcing the law.
Questions surrounding accountability, police integrity and the handling of valuable evidence have become central issues.
Observers will closely monitor how the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court evaluates the allegations and the competing claims presented by both sides.
For Mkhwanazi, the proceedings represent an opportunity to challenge the accusations and clear his name.
For prosecutors, the trial provides an opportunity to test whether the available evidence proves that the alleged offences occurred as outlined in the charge sheet.

The case is expected to continue before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors will present further evidence supporting the charges.
The defence is also expected to challenge the credibility of key witnesses, particularly Witness K testimony, while maintaining that the allegations against Julius Mkhwanazi were fabricated following the breakdown of a personal relationship.
Until the court reaches a verdict, all accused persons remain presumed innocent under South African law.
