Lamola Responds to Rubio’s Attack on South Africa and G20
Lamola responds to Rubio’s attack on South Africa and G20 in a blistering open letter that marks a new low in the deteriorating relationship between Pretoria and Washington. Following a provocative announcement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that South Africa would be “banished” from the G20 during the upcoming American presidency, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola has fired back, accusing the US of arrogance, hypocrisy, and a fundamental misunderstanding of democracy.
The diplomatic spat, which has been simmering for months, boiled over this week after Rubio published an explosive newsletter on his official Substack. In it, he laid out a vision for a “New G20” that explicitly excludes South Africa in favor of Poland, citing the “radical” behavior of the ANC-led government.
Rubio’s Explosive Substack Attack
Marco Rubio’s newsletter was not subtle. Titled “America Welcomes a New G20,” the document served as both a policy roadmap for the US G20 presidency in 2026 and a scathing indictment of the current South African administration.
Rubio blasted Pretoria, stating unequivocally that Washington “will not tolerate the behavior” of what he termed the “radical ANC-led government.” He accused South Africa of using its 2025 presidency of the forum to push an “anti-American” agenda focused on “grievance politics” rather than economic growth.
According to Rubio, the G20 summit held in Johannesburg was an “exercise in spite, division, and radical agendas.” He specifically slammed the Joburg G20 for its heavy focus on “climate change, diversity, and inclusion”—topics he dismissed as “woke ideologies” that distract from the forum’s core economic mission.
The most damaging blow came in his confirmation of South Africa’s exclusion: “President [Donald] Trump and the United States will not be extending an invitation to the South African government to participate in the G20 during our presidency. There is a place for good faith disagreement, but not dishonesty or sabotage.”
Lamola Responds to Rubio: “The World is Watching”
Minister Ronald Lamola’s response was swift and calculated. Writing on behalf of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Lamola sought to set the record straight and “educate” the top US diplomat on the realities of South Africa’s history and the success of its G20 presidency.
Lamola responds to Rubio’s attack on South Africa and G20 by highlighting the hypocrisy of the US stance. “Secretary Rubio, the world is watching. It is growing weary of double standards. It is tired of lectures on democracy from those who seem to have forgotten that democracy, at its best, must listen as much as it speaks,” Lamola wrote.
The Minister took particular exception to Rubio’s characterization of the South African economy as a “failure.” Lamola provided data to clarify several points about the country’s economic trajectory since 1994, arguing that while challenges remain, calling the economy a failure is a “gross exaggeration” designed to fit a specific political narrative.
“We do not seek your approval for our path,” Lamola asserted. “Our path is our own, chosen by our people and guided by our sovereign laws. But we do seek, and we will always extend, a hand of respectful partnership.”
The “New G20” and the Polish Pivot
Central to the US South Africa diplomatic row is the United States’ unprecedented decision to replace a permanent G20 member with a guest nation. Rubio announced that Poland would be invited to take South Africa’s seat at the 2026 summit in Miami.
This move is designed to signal a shift away from the “Global South” solidarity that South Africa championed, towards a coalition of “freedom-loving nations” aligned with US interests. Rubio praised Poland as a model of post-Cold War success, contrasting it with South Africa’s “stagnation.”
Pretoria has framed this as an attempt to undermine multilateralism. By unilaterally deciding who can attend a consensus-based forum, the US is arguably breaking the very rules that hold the G20 together.
“A Commercial Break” – Will the UK Follow Suit?
The South African Presidency has adopted a tone of strategic patience. Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya described the exclusion as a temporary hiatus. “For now, we will take a commercial break until we resume normal programming,” Magwenya said, referring to the fact that the G20 presidency will pass to the United Kingdom in 2027.
However, as the relationship continues to fracture, the Marco Rubio G20 attack raises uncomfortable questions about the future. While Pretoria has made it clear it won’t encourage other countries to boycott next year’s G20 in the United States, it is unclear whether the US will exert pressure on its “Special Relationship” partner, the UK, to continue barring South Africa.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni recently stated that the government is “already collaborating with the United Kingdom on the 2027 G20 programme,” expressing confidence that the exclusion is a temporary, Trump-era anomaly. “The United Kingdom holds a view that our focus areas… they will proceed with them,” she said.
Yet, if the US makes the “New G20” structure a condition of its continued participation, the UK may find itself caught between its historic ties to the Commonwealth and its strategic alliance with Washington.

Conclusion: A Fracture in Global Governance
As Lamola responds to Rubio, the cracks in global governance are widening. The G20, once the premier forum for international economic cooperation, is now a battleground for ideological warfare.
For South Africa, the next year will be a test of its “non-aligned” foreign policy. Banished from the table by the world’s largest economy, Pretoria will likely lean harder into its BRICS partnerships and its role as a champion for the African continent—reinforcing the very divide the US claims it wants to solve.
