SA Not Invited to First Meeting of G20 Under US Presidency
The diplomatic rift between South Africa and the United States has widened significantly. Consequently, the reality that SA not invited to first meeting of G20 sherpas has sent shockwaves through Pretoria. The United States officially sent invitations to G20 members for its presidency’s first Sherpa meeting. However, it deliberately left out South Africa, according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
This exclusion marks the first tangible action in the US plan for a “New G20.” Therefore, the world’s leading economic forum faces a potentially contentious year.
A Clear Breach of Protocol
DIRCO Director-General Zane Dangor confirmed the snub. He spoke to Parliament regarding the matter recently. Dangor revealed that the US dispatched invitations to all other member states for the Washington, D.C. meeting. Yet, South Africa’s mailbox remained empty.
“This is a clear breach of protocol,” Dangor stated firmly. He noted that the G20 operates on consensus. Thus, no single member has the unilateral right to bar a founding member. This rule applies even to the host nation.
Sherpa meetings are critical to the forum’s success. They function as the engine room of the G20. Here, representatives negotiate policy priorities for the upcoming Leaders’ Summit. By withholding the invitation, the US G20 presidency effectively silences Pretoria’s voice before discussions even begin.
Department of International Relations Fights Back
The Department of International Relations is not taking this exclusion lightly. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola penned an open letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He rejected the US decision to exclude South Africa.
“South Africa is a founding member of the G20,” Lamola wrote. He argued that their seat is not a gift. Instead, it is a right earned through economic standing. Furthermore, Lamola accused the US of undermining multilateralism. He warned that Washington’s “New G20” vision risks alienating the Global South.
The “New G20” and Poland’s Rise
This South Africa exclusion fits a broader strategy outlined by Marco Rubio. The US Secretary of State recently announced plans to “banish” South Africa. He cited “politics of grievance” and economic mismanagement as reasons.
Surprisingly, the US invited Poland to take South Africa’s seat. Rubio praised Poland’s economic success. He stated that Poland chose a path of partnership. In contrast, he criticized the ANC-led government’s “radical agendas.”
This substitution effectively creates a parallel structure. Critics argue that this move delegitimizes the forum. The G20 originally designed itself to represent both developed and developing economies.
The Sherpa Meeting Invitation Controversy
The missing Sherpa meeting invitation is a calculated diplomatic signal. This meeting takes place in mid-December 2025. It defines the agenda for the 2026 summit in Miami.
Without a seat at this table, South Africa cannot influence the presidency’s priorities. Consequently, issues critical to Africa may be sidelined. These include sovereign debt relief and just energy transitions. Instead, US-centric goals will likely dominate the agenda.
Diplomatic sources suggest that other members share these concerns. Countries like Brazil, China, and Russia have expressed discomfort. However, no coordinated action has materialized yet.
Economic Consequences for South Africa
The diplomatic freeze carries immediate economic risks. The Rand showed volatility following the news. Markets fear the consequences of South Africa’s isolation from the global economic club.
Exclusion signals a loss of investor confidence. If the world’s largest economy views South Africa as a pariah state, investors may pull back. Additionally, this South Africa exclusion jeopardizes the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). This act provides duty-free access to the US market for South African goods.

The Road Ahead: A Fractured Forum?
As the US prepares to host its first Sherpa meeting without South Africa, the future of the G20 hangs in the balance. If the US persists with this exclusion through 2026, it could permanently fracture the group. A G20 without South Africa—the only permanent African member—loses its claim to global representation.
For now, the Department of International Relations is adopting a stance of “moral diplomacy,” engaging with other member states to apply pressure on Washington. But with the Trump administration doubling down on its “America First” approach, it appears that SA not invited to first meeting of G20 is just the opening salvo in a long and bitter diplomatic winter.
