Minister Gwarube confirms leak of seven Grade 12 exam papers
Minister Gwarube confirms leak of seven Grade 12 exam papers, sending shockwaves through the education sector. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced that Grade 12 pupils at seven Tshwane high schools accessed National Senior Certificate examination papers before the exams.
During a media briefing on Thursday, she stated that investigators traced the leak directly to the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) offices. Consequently, this revelation has sparked a major investigation into the Tshwane high schools exam leak.
Extent of the National Senior Certificate Breach
Initial reports suggested a minor irregularity. However, further investigation revealed that the breach extended beyond a single paper. Officials interviewed 26 learners, and their testimonies uncovered a wider problem.
Minister Gwarube noted that the DBE set 162 exam papers in total. Unfortunately, students accessed seven of these critical papers illegally. Specifically, the leaked subjects included:
-
English Papers 1, 2, and 3
-
Mathematics Papers 1 and 2
-
Physical Science Papers 1 and 2
Furthermore, the culprits shared these exam papers via a USB storage device. Fortunately, the department confirmed that the leak remained confined to seven schools in Tshwane.
Internal Source Identified
Additionally, the Minister revealed the source of the leak. A DBE employee, who has a child currently in Grade 12, allegedly stole the documents. Reportedly, she received the papers from another official working within the exams unit. This internal betrayal has raised serious questions about security protocols.
Minister Gwarube confirms leak of seven Grade 12 exam papers and emphasized that the discovery happened through the diligence of markers. During the marking process, markers noticed something suspicious. A matric pupil’s response to a question in English Home Language Paper 2 looked identical to the answer in the official marking guideline.

Consequently, the Minister has appointed a national investigative task team. This team will investigate the exact source of the breach. Moreover, they must identify every learner who accessed the question papers. Finally, they need to verify that the breach remained localised to the identified schools.
Despite this setback, the matric exam marking process continues across the country. Gwarube added that, generally, the process is progressing well in other provinces.
