NSFAS advances 2026 funding cycle with 660,000 approvals
NSFAS advances 2026 funding cycle with 660,000 approvals, marking a pivotal moment in the South African higher education landscape. As of February 6, 2026, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed that its rigorous processing of applications has yielded a significant increase in cleared students compared to the previous month. In a detailed media briefing held on Thursday at the GCIS building in Jozi Johannesburg, Acting CEO Waseem Carrim highlighted that the scheme has successfully cleared a major backlog, ensuring that hundreds of thousands of students can begin their academic journey without the immediate burden of financial stress.
Massive Boost from SIU Recoveries
The financial stability of the 2026 cycle has been significantly bolstered by the SIU recoveries. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) recently returned a staggering R1.7 billion to the NSFAS coffers. These funds were unallocated or improperly held by various higher education institutions and TVET colleges between 2016 and 2021.
By reclaiming these public resources, the department of education and NSFAS can now redirect vital capital toward the current student cohort. This recovery is part of a broader anti-corruption effort that has already seen over R2 billion returned to the state, protecting the integrity of the nsfas.org.za portal and ensuring that funds reach the “missing middle” and the most vulnerable learners.
Breaking Down the 2026 Application Data
For students frequently checking their nsfas login in status, the latest figures provide a clear picture of the scheme’s current progress. As we enter the second week of February 2026, the following statistics have been finalized:
-
Bursary Approvals: 660,039 first-time entering students (FTEN) have been approved for full funding.
-
Pending Verifications: 85,662 applications are currently under review as outstanding documents are verified.
-
Incomplete Applications: 21,483 students still need to submit missing documentation to avoid being excluded.
-
Rejections: 116,266 applications did not meet the initial criteria, though many have been funneled into the student loan scheme.
University and TVET College Insights
Institutions such as the University of Pretoria Gauteng, Wits, and Unisa are currently processing a flood of university registration data. At Wits, students are encouraged to use the Wits self service portal to link their funding status with their enrollment. Similarly, Unisa students are utilizing myunisa to confirm that their NSFAS allowances for the first semester have been successfully captured.
| Institution Type | Met Academic Progression | Failed Progression |
| Universities | 436,924 | 109,761 |
| TVET Colleges | 127,503 | 79,461 |
The Role of the Student Loan Scheme for the Missing Middle
A key feature of the NSFAS 2026 funding model is the expanded student loan scheme. This initiative targets students who fall outside the traditional bursary threshold but still cannot afford the rising costs of tertiary education.
To date, NSFAS has received 26,538 loan applications. While 4,609 of these were converted to full bursaries after further financial checks, 1,561 loans have been officially approved. For students at the University of Pretoria Gauteng or those utilizing self service at Wits, these loans offer a vital alternative to commercial bank debt, featuring lower interest rates and more flexible repayment terms.
Accommodation and Allowance Disbursements
As the academic year kicks off, the department of education and the DBE have emphasized the importance of student well-being. NSFAS has already disbursed R3.6 billion to universities to cover February allowances.
Key Disbursement Dates:
-
February 2, 2026: Initial upfront payments made to universities.
-
February 13, 2026: First allowance disbursement for TVET college students.
-
February 27, 2026: Second round of TVET disbursements following extended registration.
Accommodation remains a logistical challenge. Out of nearly 195,000 housing applications, only about 55,000 have been fully approved. NSFAS is currently upgrading its accommodation portal to streamline the process, allowing students to track their status and log maintenance issues in real-time, much like the Wits self service or myunisa platforms.

What to Do If Your Application is Pending
If you are still waiting for a decision, it is imperative to visit nsfas.org.za and check your nsfas login in dashboard. Acting CEO Waseem Carrim noted that many delays are caused by “unclear or incorrect documents.” Specifically, the Parental Consent Form must be signed, dated, and include a valid email address.
For students who have been rejected, the appeals process is currently open. There are 91,937 appeals in progress, with 10,445 already approved. If your circumstances have changed—such as a change in household income or a death in the family—ensure you submit your appeal within 30 days of receiving your rejection notice.
