Orlando Pirates return to winning ways with 3-0 victory over Chippa United
Orlando Pirates return to winning ways with Chippa win after the defending champions produced a dominant second-half performance to beat Chippa United 3-0 at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday.
The victory came at an important stage of the Betway Premiership campaign after Pirates had been held to a draw in their previous league outing.
The Buccaneers entered the match knowing that dropped points could allow their rivals to strengthen their positions at the top of the table. Instead, three second-half goals gave coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side a convincing win and moved them back to the summit.
Ghampani Lungu opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark before Lebone Seema added a second with a header from a corner. Daniel Msendami then completed the scoring late in the match to seal all three points.
The result leaves Pirates with seven points from their opening three league matches.
Orlando Pirates climb back to the top
Orlando Pirates made a positive start to the season, but Sunday’s victory provided an important reminder of why they remain among the leading contenders for the title.
The Buccaneers had collected wins in their opening matches before being held to a draw in their previous league game.
That result had allowed rivals such as Kaizer Chiefs to occupy the top position, increasing the pressure on Pirates to respond.
They did exactly that against Chippa.
The first half, however, was far more difficult than the final scoreline suggests.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock during the opening 45 minutes, and Pirates struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Chippa defended with discipline and attempted to limit the spaces available to the Buccaneers’ attackers.
The match therefore looked destined to remain close until the visitors finally found the breakthrough after the interval.
Ghampani Lungu breaks the deadlock
Ghampani Lungu produced the moment of individual brilliance that changed the match.
The Zambian attacker received the ball near the edge of the penalty area before turning away from his marker.
He then unleashed a powerful effort towards goal.
Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was unable to keep the shot out, allowing the ball to find the back of the net.
The goal arrived in the 60th minute and immediately changed the momentum of the contest.
Pirates suddenly looked much more dangerous, while Chippa were forced to abandon some of their defensive caution and push forward in search of an equaliser.
For Lungu, the goal was an encouraging contribution during his first season with the club.
The experienced attacker showed composure and confidence at a crucial moment and gave Pirates the platform they needed to take control of the match.
Pirates strike again three minutes later
Pirates did not allow Chippa time to recover from the opener.
Just three minutes later, the Buccaneers doubled their advantage from a corner.
Lebone Seema rose highest and directed his header towards the far corner, giving Nwabali no chance to stop the effort.
The goal made it 2-0 and placed Pirates firmly in control.
Seema’s contribution was significant not only because it extended the lead but also because it demonstrated his importance at both ends of the pitch.
The defender was one of the standout performers last season and was recognised as the Defender of the Season.
His ability to contribute goals from set pieces provides Pirates with another attacking weapon.
Chippa United struggle after conceding twice
Chippa United had competed strongly during the opening half, but the two quick goals left them with a difficult task.
The Eastern Cape club needed to score twice just to rescue a point, meaning they were forced to take greater risks.
Those risks created additional space for Pirates to exploit on the counterattack.
Chippa continued trying to build attacks, but Pirates’ defence remained organised and disciplined.
Stanley Nwabali was also called upon again as the Buccaneers searched for a third goal.
The Nigerian goalkeeper, who has represented his country at major international tournaments, was unable to prevent the damage from the earlier goals.
The final stages became increasingly difficult for Chippa as Pirates continued to threaten.
Daniel Msendami seals the victory
Daniel Msendami completed Pirates’ victory late in the contest.
The Zimbabwean forward came off the bench and produced an immediate impact after capitalising on a defensive mistake.
Msendami found the back of the net in the 88th minute to make it 3-0.
It was particularly significant because the goal was his first for Orlando Pirates since joining the club in January.
The strike effectively ended any remaining hopes of a Chippa comeback and allowed Pirates’ players and supporters to celebrate a convincing away victory.
For Msendami, scoring at this stage of the season could provide a major confidence boost as he competes for a more regular role in the squad.
Betway Premiership title race remains tight
The latest Betway Premiership standings underline just how competitive the opening weeks of the campaign have been.
Pirates now have seven points from three matches.
Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu also sit on seven points, with the teams separated by goal difference.
That means every point earned during the early part of the season could prove important when the title race becomes more intense.
Pirates’ three-goal margin could also prove valuable later if goal difference becomes a deciding factor.
Although it is still early in the campaign, the defending champions have made it clear that they intend to remain firmly involved in the battle for the championship.
Ouaddou pleased with second-half response
Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised the reaction of his players after a goalless opening period.
The manager said he challenged the squad at half-time and was pleased with the response in the second half.
The turnaround was obvious.
Pirates were more aggressive in possession after the interval, attacked with greater purpose and were more clinical when opportunities arrived.
The three goals in less than 30 minutes transformed what had been a frustrating match into a comfortable victory.
Ouaddou will also be encouraged by the fact that the team managed to keep a clean sheet while scoring three times.
Chippa United must regroup
For Chippa United, the defeat is a disappointing result after a competitive first half.
The club will need to improve its response to setbacks and find greater consistency in front of goal.
The loss also highlights the importance of maintaining concentration against teams with strong attacking options.
Chippa had managed to keep Pirates scoreless for 60 minutes, but once the first goal arrived, the game quickly slipped away.
The challenge now is to ensure that one setback does not become the beginning of a longer run without results.
Pirates now turn attention to MTN8
The Buccaneers will not have much time to reflect on Sunday’s victory because their attention now turns to cup football.
Pirates are set to face Sekhukhune United in an MTN8 clash next weekend.
The fixture will present another demanding test for Ouaddou’s squad as they attempt to balance league and cup ambitions.
Winning the league remains a major target, but success in domestic knockout competitions would also add to the pressure on the defending champions to maintain their high standards across multiple fronts.
The momentum from Sunday’s win could therefore be valuable.
