Chelsea crumbled to a damaging 5-2 defeat at PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie
Chelsea suffered a damaging 5–2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on 10 March 2026 at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France, leaving the English side with a huge task ahead in the second leg.
The thrilling Champions League clash saw PSG punish Chelsea with a late surge of goals, including two stunning strikes from Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia that secured a commanding advantage for the French champions.
Although Chelsea managed to fight back twice during the match, defensive lapses and costly goalkeeping errors ultimately led to a dramatic late collapse that could prove decisive in the tie.
PSG take control in Champions League showdown
The match began with both sides showing attacking intent as they battled for control of the Champions League knockout clash. Paris Saint-Germain looked dangerous from the start, using their pace and creativity to stretch Chelsea’s defence.
Chelsea, however, responded bravely and managed to stay competitive during the early stages. The breakthrough came shortly before the half-hour mark when Chelsea surprisingly took the lead.
Defender Malo Gusto’s effort slipped through the hands of PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov and crossed the line, giving the visitors hope in the high-pressure Champions League encounter.
But the lead did not last long.
Just five minutes before halftime, PSG launched a devastating counterattack. Ousmane Dembélé danced past Wesley Fofana and fired past goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen to restore parity for the French giants. The equaliser reignited the momentum for PSG as the crowd inside the stadium sensed that the match was about to explode into life.
Chelsea fight back but mistakes prove costly
Enzo Fernandez restores hope
The second half began cautiously before Chelsea found another moment of brilliance. Pedro Neto burst down the left flank and delivered a precise pass to Enzo Fernandez, who calmly finished to make it 2-2.
At that point, the match looked perfectly balanced. Chelsea had shown resilience by responding twice, and the tie remained open heading into the final stages.
However, the turning point arrived in the 74th minute.
Goalkeeping error changes the game
Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen made a disastrous mistake while attempting to play out from the back. His pass was intercepted by Bradley Barcola, who quickly fed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Kvaratskhelia calmly set up Vitinha, who chipped the stranded goalkeeper to restore PSG’s lead at 3-2. The goal triggered a sudden collapse from Chelsea.

Stunning strike from distance
With Chelsea pushing forward in search of another equaliser, PSG exploited the spaces left behind.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia produced one of the goals of the night with a thunderous long-range strike that flew into the net. The spectacular effort stunned the Chelsea defence and extended PSG’s advantage to 4-2.
Fifth goal seals dominant PSG win
The Georgian star then completed his incredible performance by scoring again late in the match. After PSG broke Chelsea’s press, Kvaratskhelia found himself in space inside the penalty area and calmly finished to make it 5-2. The goal effectively sealed the tie and gave PSG a huge advantage heading into the second leg.
The result also served as a form of revenge for PSG following their previous defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final earlier in the year.
Chelsea manager reacts to damaging defeat
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior admitted that his team failed to react properly after conceding key goals. According to the Chelsea boss, the team was still competitive at 3-2 but lost their composure during the final minutes of the match.
“At 3-2 we are still in the tie,” Rosenior said after the match.
“But when Kvaratskhelia scores a goal like that, it becomes very difficult.”
Rosenior also took responsibility for the decision to play out from the back, which ultimately led to the costly error from Jorgensen.
“You take risks with your style of play,” he explained. “Sometimes those risks don’t pay off.”
Late drama and heated moments
The match ended with tension boiling over between the two teams. Chelsea winger Pedro Neto was involved in a controversial moment after pushing a ball boy while attempting to retrieve the ball quickly.
Players from both sides became involved in a heated exchange as VAR briefly reviewed the incident. Ultimately, no red card was issued.
Neto later apologised publicly, explaining that the push occurred in the heat of the moment during an intense match.
A difficult week for Premier League clubs
Chelsea’s defeat adds to what has been a difficult week for English teams competing in the Champions League. Several Premier League clubs struggled in their European fixtures, raising questions about the league’s competitiveness in continental competitions this season.
Goalkeeping mistakes have also become a recurring issue across multiple teams, with several high-profile errors proving costly. For Chelsea, however, the focus will quickly shift to the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Can Chelsea stage a Champions League comeback?
Despite the heavy defeat, Chelsea still have a chance to recover in the second leg. Football history has produced many dramatic Champions League comebacks, especially when teams return to their home stadium.
However, overturning a three-goal deficit against a team as strong as PSG will require a near-perfect performance. Chelsea must improve defensively, limit mistakes, and take their scoring opportunities if they hope to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
