Sundowns suffer shock loss against TS Galaxy
Sundowns suffer shock loss against TS Galaxy to conclude their domestic league schedule, dealing a potentially fatal blow to their championship aspirations on a dramatic Tuesday evening. Mamelodi Sundowns’ stuttering end to the Betway Premiership campaign was cemented at the Mbombela Stadium, where they were defeated 3-2 by their ultimate bogey side. This unexpected result means the reigning champions must now sit nervously on the sidelines and rely on an improbable collapse from Orlando Pirates in their final two matches, or they will end the season without the league trophy for the first time since 2017.
For TS Galaxy, the victory was nothing short of monumental. Operating under interim coach Bernard Parker, the Rockets ended a dismal 13-match winless run in the league, officially securing top-flight football for next season by pulling completely clear of the relegation danger zone. As the dust settles on this 3-2 thriller, the landscape of South African football has shifted dramatically.
TS Galaxy: The Ultimate Bogey Team for Mamelodi Sundowns
It is no secret that the Mbombela Stadium has become a fortress of frustration for Mamelodi Sundowns. Following Tuesday’s result, the Brazilians are now winless in their last five visits to Nelspruit, recording two draws and three defeats. No other team in the top flight has enjoyed such dominant home form against Sundowns over the last decade.
TS Galaxy seemingly knows exactly how to get under the skin of Miguel Cardoso’s star-studded squad. Having already knocked Sundowns out of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 home win earlier in the campaign, Parker’s men proved that their giant-killing ability was no fluke. They did not play like a team that had not won a league game since January; instead, they played with the fierce determination of a squad looking to disrupt the established order.
Early Setbacks and a Leaky Defence
The warning signs flashed early for the visitors. TS Galaxy hit the front following an early penalty conceded after a clumsy foul by Zuko Mdunyelwa on Seluleko Mahlambi. Mdunyelwa could have few complaints, having caught the explosive midfielder from behind as he burst into the box. Veteran forward Victor Letsoalo stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards, sending Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams the wrong way in the 7th minute. This marked back-to-back goals for Letsoalo, bringing his tally to seven across all competitions this season.
The situation went from bad to worse just 11 minutes later. On 18 minutes, Galaxy hit Sundowns on a blistering counter-attack. Mahlambi broke straight up the middle, splitting the defence before feeding Sedwyn George on the right-hand side of the penalty area. George’s low, hard shot nestled into the far corner beyond Williams’ reach. It was a milestone moment for George—his first goal for the club and his first since netting for Royal AM against Galaxy back in December 2024.
This defensive fragility has become a sudden and alarming trend for Mamelodi Sundowns. Including their extraordinary, chaotic 7-4 victory over Siwelele on Saturday, Cardoso’s defence has suddenly become porous. Given that Sundowns had only conceded 21 league goals all season prior to this week, the fact that 33% of the goals they have let in during the entire campaign have come in their final two matches is a startling statistic. It is the first time since 2008 that Sundowns have conceded three or more goals in back-to-back league games.
Mamelodi Sundowns Fight Back Through Brayan Leon
Despite the shock of going 2-0 down, a team of Sundowns’ pedigree was never going to surrender quietly. Sundowns suffer shock loss against TS Galaxy, but not without putting up a valiant fight in the latter stages of the first half.
The catalyst for their brief resurgence was the ever-reliable Brayan Leon. With the team desperately needing a lifeline, Leon delivered twice in the space of two frantic minutes. In the 38th minute, Nuno Santos delivered a superb, curling cross from the right flank. Leon rose completely unopposed, capitalizing on a moment where the Galaxy centre-backs were completely at sea, to head the ball powerfully into the back of the net.
Just three minutes later, Sundowns were awarded a penalty after Mpho Mvelase was penalized for a handball in the box. Leon confidently stepped up and converted, bringing the score to 2-2 going into the break. Leon has proven to be an exceptional signing since arriving in Pretoria in January, taking his goal tally to 15 in 24 appearances, supplemented by several key assists.
Equally deserving of praise is the ‘Assist King’ Nuno Santos, who now boasts an incredible 16 goal contributions in 34 games this season. Remarkably, this 2-2 scoreline at the interval marked only the third time in the 30-year history of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) that Sundowns were involved in such a high-scoring halftime draw.
The Second Half: TS Galaxy Seals the Deal
The momentum seemed to have swung entirely in favor of the visitors, but TS Galaxy had other plans. The second half had barely commenced when the home side reclaimed the lead in the 46th minute.
Winning possession deep in midfield, Sphesihle Maduna showcased blistering pace to burst down the middle, slipping right behind the sleeping Sundowns defence. While Maduna could have easily taken the shot himself, he showed incredible awareness and unselfishness, squaring the ball for Mvelase. The 37-year-old veteran easily completed the tap-in, perfectly making up for his earlier error that led to the Sundowns penalty. It was Mvelase’s first goal since August, and his positioning was a testament to his enduring match intelligence.
From that point onward, Bernard Parker’s side executed a tactical masterclass in game management. They were perfectly happy to sit back in a low block for the remainder of the second period, fiercely defending their narrow lead. Cardoso threw everything at the problem, bringing on the likes of Tashreeq Matthews, Reisinho, and Khulumani Ndamane for the final 20 minutes. Even with the late inclusion of top scorer Iqraam Rayners, Sundowns could not find a way past the resolute Rockets defence, handing Parker a famous first win during his interim tenure.
Betway Premiership and the Shifting Title Race
The fact that Sundowns suffer shock loss against TS Galaxy has radically altered the complexion of the domestic season. With their league campaign now fully completed, Mamelodi Sundowns currently sit top of the table with 68 points from 30 games. However, their lead over Orlando Pirates is a mere three points.
Orlando Pirates now hold all the cards in the title race. Sitting on 65 points with two games left to play, the Buccaneers only need a single win and a draw—or perhaps just one high-scoring win depending on the final goal difference metrics—to snatch the crown. Sundowns’ decision to push their fixtures forward to accommodate their continental ambitions has backfired domestically.
Sundowns must now attempt to mentally reset and fully focus their attention on the upcoming CAF Champions League final against Moroccan giants AS FAR. The two-legged tie begins with the home leg in Pretoria this coming Sunday, offering a chance for continental glory to ease the sting of their domestic collapse.
