Vaal horror crash: Scholar taxi driver charged following a devastating Vaal scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark that has left South Africa reeling after 13 learners lost their lives in one of the deadliest school transport accidents in recent years.
The crash occurred on Monday, January 19, and has sparked nationwide grief and renewed calls for urgent reforms in scholar transport safety.
13 Vanderbijlpark learner deaths confirmed
The Vanderbijlpark learner deaths were confirmed by Gauteng police after a scholar transport vehicle collided with a truck. Thirteen learners died at the scene, while several others sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a 22-year-old scholar transport driver was arrested after being discharged from hospital.
“He is expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court within 48 hours, facing 13 counts of culpable homicide, as well as charges of reckless and negligent driving,” Masondo said.
Gauteng police culpable homicide charges
Masondo said police visited hospitals and the government mortuary to verify the fatalities and injuries linked to the Vaal scholar transport crash.
“It can be confirmed that 13 learners died at the scene of the accident. Five learners were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, of whom one has since been discharged,” he said.
The truck driver involved in the collision escaped unharmed, while the truck passenger sustained injuries and is receiving medical care.
Investigations remain ongoing as police continue to collect witness statements and examine vehicle roadworthiness.
One learner initially unidentified
The Gauteng Department of Education earlier confirmed that one learner was initially unidentified among the 13 who died.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona addressed the media at Hoërskool Vanderbijl, where several learners were among the deceased.
“Out of the 13 learners who passed away, we initially had one unidentified child,” Mabona said, adding that efforts were underway to assist families at the mortuary.
Hospitalised learners and support
Mabona confirmed that three learners remain hospitalised, while one learner has since been discharged. Two learners are receiving treatment in public hospitals, and one was transferred to a private facility following parental intervention.
The scholar taxi driver arrested was discharged from hospital on Monday night and is currently being processed by police.
Psychosocial support and government response
Psychosocial support teams have been deployed to affected schools and families, with counselling services rolled out across the community.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is visiting the families of the deceased learners, while Premier Panyaza Lesufi and members of the provincial executive are expected to brief the media on government’s response and next steps.
