Orlando Pirates held to draw by AmaZulu in Durban after the defending champions were forced to settle for a point in a 1-1 Betway Premiership encounter at King’s Park Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers started the match strongly and looked capable of securing another victory after taking an early lead through Tshepang Moremi. However, AmaZulu responded before half-time through Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, who converted a penalty to restore parity.
Despite creating several opportunities throughout the match, Orlando Pirates could not find the winning goal and ultimately dropped their first points of the league campaign.
Orlando Pirates make strong start
Orlando Pirates controlled much of the opening exchanges and quickly put pressure on the AmaZulu defence.
The visitors were rewarded in the seventh minute when Moremi reacted quickest inside the penalty area after AmaZulu goalkeeper Faveur Kouassi failed to hold onto Yanela Mbuthuma’s effort.
Moremi kept his composure from close range and found the back of the net to give Pirates a 1-0 advantage.
The early goal appeared to settle the Buccaneers, who continued to create opportunities as AmaZulu struggled to establish themselves in the match.
Pirates could have doubled their advantage before the interval. Mbuthuma came close after an effort was cleared off the line, while Ghampani Lungu also had an opportunity after being played through on goal.
Moremi, who was making a significant contribution in attack, also had further opportunities but could not add to his early goal.
The visitors’ inability to take their chances would eventually prove costly.
AmaZulu FC fight back before half-time
AmaZulu gradually grew into the contest and began finding more space in dangerous areas.
The hosts thought they had equalised when Mlondi Mbanjwa found the back of the net, but the assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside.
The decision added to the frustration inside the stadium, but AmaZulu continued to push for an equaliser.
Their persistence was eventually rewarded shortly before the half-time whistle.
Kamogelo Sebelebele was adjudged to have fouled Mbanjwa inside the penalty area, giving AmaZulu a valuable opportunity from the spot.
Ngwenya stepped forward and confidently converted the penalty, sending the match into half-time level at 1-1.
The equaliser changed the momentum of the contest and gave Arthur Zwane’s team renewed belief going into the second half.
Betway Premiership clash becomes increasingly open
The second half developed into a much more competitive affair, with both teams looking for the decisive goal.
Orlando Pirates remained dangerous in attack and continued to threaten the AmaZulu goal. Moremi saw one effort deflected narrowly wide, while other chances were created through the movement of Mbuthuma and the attacking players around him.
Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou also turned to his bench as he attempted to inject additional energy into his team.
Oswin Appollis was among the players introduced as the Buccaneers searched for a second goal.
AmaZulu, however, were not content to simply defend. The hosts created their own opportunities and could have completed the comeback had their finishing been more clinical.
Ngwenya came close to scoring his second goal when he fired narrowly wide after receiving a dangerous cross.
The match remained finely balanced as both teams pushed forward without being able to produce the decisive finish.
Tshepang Moremi wastes opportunities
Moremi’s early goal was a highlight for Orlando Pirates, but the forward could have made an even greater impact had he converted some of his later opportunities.
The Buccaneers created enough chances to potentially put the game beyond AmaZulu before the hosts equalised.
Pirates’ attacking players were often able to penetrate the AmaZulu defensive structure, but their final decision-making let them down.
The wastefulness became increasingly frustrating as the match progressed.
With Evidence Makgopa unavailable because of injury, the responsibility in front of goal has increased for the other attacking options.
Mbuthuma was also unable to convert one of his best opportunities, while Moremi struggled to maintain the accuracy that produced his early goal.
The missed chances ultimately meant Pirates had to settle for a draw.
Sihle Nduli injury adds to Pirates concerns
One of the major talking points from the match was the injury suffered by Sihle Nduli.
The midfielder had returned to the Orlando Pirates starting lineup after recovering from a serious knee injury.
However, his comeback ended prematurely after he suffered another injury following a heavy challenge.
Nduli was stretchered from the field and replaced, leaving Pirates facing another potential concern in midfield.
The incident also generated debate around the officiating, with Ngwenya receiving a yellow card for the challenge.
Pirates will now await further information regarding Nduli’s condition as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
AmaZulu remain unbeaten against Pirates
Although AmaZulu were unable to secure maximum points, the result extended their remarkable unbeaten run against Orlando Pirates.
The Buccaneers have now gone 26 matches without losing to AmaZulu.
The result means it has been more than a decade since AmaZulu last defeated Pirates in a competitive fixture.
The long-standing record highlights the difficulty AmaZulu have faced against the Soweto giants, even though Wednesday’s performance showed that Zwane’s team was capable of competing with the defending champions.
For AmaZulu, the draw represents an opportunity to build momentum early in the Betway Premiership campaign.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya provides crucial equaliser
Ngwenya once again proved important for AmaZulu after converting the penalty that brought the hosts level.
The forward remained a threat during the second half and nearly completed the turnaround with another effort.
His performance will provide encouragement to Zwane as AmaZulu look to improve their attacking efficiency.
However, the coach acknowledged that his team could have done more to take advantage of the opportunities created.
AmaZulu had several moments where better decision-making in the final third could have resulted in a winning goal.
Orlando Pirates drop first points of season
The 1-1 result means Orlando Pirates could not maintain their perfect start to the Betway Premiership season.
The Buccaneers had hoped to collect another victory after beginning their campaign strongly, but their failure to convert their chances ultimately cost them two points.
Pirates remain one of the leading contenders for the league title, but Wednesday’s performance demonstrated that dominance in possession and creating opportunities is not enough without clinical finishing.
The champions will now need to regroup and focus on their next fixture.
For AmaZulu, the draw against Orlando Pirates will be viewed as a positive result, particularly after falling behind so early.
The two teams ultimately shared the points after an entertaining contest that produced goals, missed chances, controversy and an injury.
Orlando Pirates held to draw by AmaZulu in Durban, with Moremi’s early strike cancelled out by Ngwenya’s penalty as both sides left King’s Park Stadium with a point.
