Sundowns defeat Gallants, join Pirates as co-leaders
Sundowns defeat Gallants, join Pirates and Chiefs as co-leaders after Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways with a convincing 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.
The defending champions collected three valuable points through goals from Malibongwe Khoza and in-form attacker Cassius Mailula, moving to seven points from their opening three league matches.
The result keeps Sundowns firmly among the early pace-setters in the PSL, with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs also occupying the top positions on the table.
More importantly for Miguel Cardoso’s team, the victory provided some stability after an inconsistent opening to the campaign.
Mamelodi Sundowns return to winning ways
Mamelodi Sundowns entered Wednesday’s fixture looking to regain momentum after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
That match once again demonstrated the resilience of Cardoso’s team. Sundowns found themselves chasing the game before Mailula came off the bench to score the equaliser.
Against Gallants, however, the champions were more comfortable and controlled the contest for long periods.
The Tshwane side dominated possession and territory, forcing Gallants to spend much of the match defending.
Khoza eventually broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, giving Sundowns a deserved advantage.
The opening goal settled the hosts and allowed them to dictate the pace of the game.
Gallants struggled to create sustained pressure and were unable to prevent Sundowns from controlling the midfield.
Khoza gives Sundowns the breakthrough
Khoza’s opener was an important moment in a match where Sundowns had already established territorial dominance.
The goal allowed the defending champions to play with greater confidence while forcing Gallants to take more risks.
Sundowns went into the interval leading 1-0, although Cardoso was dealt an injury concern when Khuliso Mudau was forced off.
Zuko Mdunyelwa replaced Mudau as Sundowns adjusted their defensive setup.
The hosts nevertheless maintained control and continued looking for a second goal.
Cassius Mailula continues impressive return
Cassius Mailula has quickly become one of the most talked-about players in Sundowns’ early-season campaign.
After returning to Chloorkop, the attacking midfielder has wasted little time making an impact.
Mailula’s goal against Gallants was his third in four appearances, highlighting the attacking threat he has brought into Cardoso’s squad.
His performance against Chiefs had already demonstrated his ability to change matches from the bench.
Against Gallants, he went a step further by helping Sundowns secure all three points.
Mailula seals the victory
Just after the hour mark, Mailula produced a quality finish to double Sundowns’ advantage.
The second goal effectively removed much of the pressure from the hosts and put them firmly in control.
At 2-0, Gallants needed a significant response to get back into the contest.
Instead, Sundowns managed the remainder of the match professionally and protected their advantage.
Mailula’s continued scoring form will be particularly encouraging for Cardoso as the season progresses.
The forward’s ability to contribute goals could provide Sundowns with another attacking option during a campaign in which they will be competing on multiple fronts.
PSL home record reaches 31 matches
The victory was significant beyond the three points.
Sundowns extended their extraordinary unbeaten home run to 31 matches, consisting of 28 victories and three draws.
That run represents a new benchmark in the Premier Soccer League era.
The Brazilians’ last home defeat came on 25 May 2024, when Cape Town City defeated them on the final day of the 2023/24 league campaign.
Since then, Sundowns have transformed their home venues into one of the toughest environments for visiting teams.
Loftus Versfeld remains a fortress
Loftus Versfeld once again demonstrated why it has become synonymous with Sundowns’ dominance.
Opponents have repeatedly struggled to cope with the champions’ possession-based approach and attacking quality in Tshwane.
The 31-match unbeaten streak also demonstrates the consistency that has made Sundowns the dominant force in South African domestic football for much of the past decade.
Maintaining that record will be a major objective as the season develops.
Marumo Gallants still searching for first win
For Marumo Gallants, Wednesday’s defeat extended what has been a difficult opening to the season.
The club began its campaign with a goalless draw against newly promoted Kruger United before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC.
The loss to Sundowns means Gallants remain without a victory and sit in the bottom third of the standings.
New coach Phuti Mohafe will now have to find solutions quickly as the team attempts to avoid being dragged into an early relegation battle.
Gallants struggle against Sundowns
The result also continued Sundowns’ strong record against Gallants.
The Brazilians are now unbeaten in their last nine league meetings against Gallants, a sequence stretching back to the 2021/22 season.
That historical advantage was evident again on Wednesday.
Gallants struggled to maintain possession and rarely threatened to take control of the contest.
Sundowns’ pressure prevented the visitors from developing sustained attacking momentum.
For Mohafe, the challenge will be to improve the team’s competitiveness while finding a way to turn draws and defeats into victories.
Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs set the pace
The victory keeps Sundowns within touching distance of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the table.
With seven points from their opening three matches, Sundowns have positioned themselves strongly in the early stages of the PSL campaign.
The small points gap means goal difference is already playing an important role in determining the order at the top.
Kaizer Chiefs rivalry remains important
Sundowns’ 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday showed that the defending champions still have plenty of work to do despite their quality.
Chiefs managed to challenge Sundowns and take the lead before Mailula rescued a point for Cardoso’s team.
The subsequent victory over Gallants was therefore important because it prevented Sundowns from dropping further behind their title rivals.
The league is still in its early stages, but every point could prove valuable in what is expected to be another competitive title race.
MTN8 challenge awaits Sundowns
Sundowns will not have much time to celebrate the victory because their attention quickly turns to cup football.
The champions are preparing for their MTN8 semi-final first leg against Golden Arrows this weekend.
That fixture will test Cardoso’s squad depth, particularly with the team competing across domestic competitions.
The injury to Mudau will also be monitored closely ahead of the encounter.
Sundowns have already demonstrated their ability to recover from difficult situations this season.
They defeated Polokwane City 3-2 in their MTN8 quarter-final before overcoming TS Galaxy by the same scoreline in the league.
Those matches highlighted both the team’s attacking strength and some defensive vulnerabilities.
What the win means for Sundowns
The PSL title race may still be in its infancy, but Sundowns’ victory sends an important message to their competitors.
After an uneven start, the champions have responded with three points and another impressive home record.
Mailula’s form provides another reason for optimism, while the return of several key players should strengthen Cardoso’s options.
Sundowns defeat Gallants, join Pirates and Chiefs as co-leaders captures the importance of the result, but the season remains a marathon rather than a sprint.
The defending champions will need to maintain consistency if they want to remain at the top.

Sundowns face a demanding season
With Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs also challenging near the summit, there is little room for complacency.
Sundowns’ ability to turn home matches into victories could prove crucial.
Their 31-match unbeaten home record provides an impressive foundation, but maintaining it will become increasingly difficult as opponents adapt to their tactics.
For now, however, Cardoso can be satisfied with a professional performance.
Khoza provided the breakthrough, Mailula continued his impressive scoring run and Sundowns secured the three points.
For Gallants, the search for a first victory continues.
For Sundowns, the focus now shifts to Golden Arrows and another opportunity to demonstrate why they remain one of the strongest teams in South African football.
