Friday weather: Cloudy and cold across South Africa, KZN showers are expected as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts cool to cold conditions across much of the country.
Several provinces will experience partly cloudy skies, morning frost or fog, while KwaZulu-Natal could see isolated showers and rain. The Northern Cape is also facing a weather warning for potentially damaging interior winds and reduced visibility caused by blowing dust.
Friday weather South Africa: Cold conditions expected
The Friday weather South Africa forecast points to a generally cold start to the day across the interior, with temperatures expected to rise slightly during the afternoon in several provinces.
Gauteng residents can expect frost in some areas, followed by partly cloudy and cold conditions. The northern parts of the province will be somewhat cooler.
Pretoria is forecast to reach a low of 5°C and a high of 17°C, while Johannesburg could see temperatures between 3°C and 16°C. Vereeniging is expected to range from 3°C to 17°C.

Skukuza will be comparatively warmer, with temperatures expected to range from 9°C to 21°C.
In Limpopo, conditions are expected to be cloudy to partly cloudy and cool. Polokwane could see 5°C to 18°C, while Phalaborwa is forecast at 10°C to 21°C.
Tzaneen should range between 6°C and 20°C, with Musina reaching 9°C to 21°C. Lephalale is expected to record 8°C to 20°C, while Mokopane could see 4°C to 19°C.
North West will experience partly cloudy and cold to cool conditions.
Klerksdorp is expected to range from 5°C to 18°C, Potchefstroom from 4°C to 17°C, Mahikeng from 6°C to 19°C, Rustenburg from 5°C to 19°C, and Vryburg from 6°C to 20°C.
The Free State will also experience cold conditions, with morning frost expected in places.
Bloemfontein is forecast to reach 3°C to 18°C, Welkom 4°C to 17°C, and Bethlehem could be particularly chilly at 2°C to 15°C.
KwaZulu-Natal showers expected
The KwaZulu-Natal showers are among the main features of Friday’s forecast.
SAWS expects morning fog over the interior, followed by partly cloudy and cold to cool conditions. Isolated showers and rain are possible in the extreme north-eastern parts of the province.
Along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, winds are expected to be light westerly to north-westerly during the morning before becoming moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.
Durban is forecast to record temperatures between 12°C and 21°C, while Richards Bay could also range from 12°C to 21°C.
Pietermaritzburg is expected to experience a colder morning, with temperatures ranging between 4°C and 20°C.
Ladysmith could see temperatures as low as 2°C, with a daytime high of 18°C.
Residents in areas affected by showers should remain alert to changing conditions, particularly during periods of reduced visibility caused by fog.
SAWS weather forecast includes wind warning
The SAWS weather forecast includes a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging interior winds in parts of the Northern Cape.
The warning applies to the Hantam and Karoo Hoogland municipalities, where strong winds could cause localised damage to temporary structures.
The conditions could also result in reduced visibility because of blowing dust.
A Yellow Level 2 warning indicates a moderate risk of weather-related impacts and calls for caution and awareness among affected communities.
People living in areas covered by the warning should secure loose objects around homes and businesses and exercise additional caution when travelling.
Northern Cape conditions
The Northern Cape will experience morning fog patches over the extreme western interior before partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm conditions develop.
Along the coast, moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly winds are expected before becoming light and variable from the evening.
Upington is forecast to range from 9°C to 26°C, while Kimberley could see 7°C to 21°C.
De Aar is expected to record 6°C to 21°C, Alexander Bay 10°C to 19°C, Springbok 13°C to 24°C, Calvinia 12°C to 25°C, and Sutherland 7°C to 19°C.
Western Cape weather forecast
The Western Cape is expected to experience cloudy conditions with fog over the north-western parts during the morning.
The remainder of the province will be partly cloudy and cool to warm.
Along the western coast, moderate to fresh westerly to north-westerly winds are expected. Elsewhere along the coast, winds will be westerly to south-westerly.
Cape Town is forecast to record 12°C to 18°C, while Vredendal could range between 9°C and 22°C.
Riversdale is expected to be warmer, with temperatures between 12°C and 27°C, while George could reach 15°C to 26°C.
Worcester is forecast at 9°C to 22°C, Beaufort West at 10°C to 26°C, and Oudtshoorn at 11°C to 26°C.
Eastern Cape set for warmer conditions
The Eastern Cape will generally experience more settled conditions than several inland provinces.
The western half of the province is expected to be fine and warm, with moderate north-easterly winds along the coast.
The eastern half will also be fine and warm, although conditions will be cooler over the northern high ground.
Gqeberha is forecast to range between 13°C and 25°C, while Makhanda could see 9°C to 25°C.
Nxuba is expected to record 3°C to 22°C, while Robert Sobukwe Town could range from 6°C to 23°C.
KuGompo City is forecast at 11°C to 23°C, Port St Johns 9°C to 22°C, and Mthatha 5°C to 23°C.
Komani could see 3°C to 19°C, while Qonce is expected to reach 9°C to 25°C.
Cold weather South Africa: What residents should expect
The cold weather South Africa is expected to be most noticeable during the morning, particularly across the high-lying interior.
Frost is possible in parts of Gauteng and the Free State, while fog could affect sections of Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Although daytime temperatures will become more comfortable in some areas, residents should prepare for chilly starts.
Motorists should also be cautious in areas affected by fog, while communities under the Northern Cape wind warning should take precautions against strong winds and blowing dust.
