MK Party announces raft of changes to its leadership caucus

Jacob Zuma Appoint son Duduzane Zuma as New DP as the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party unveiled sweeping leadership changes that have elevated Duduzane Zuma to the position of first deputy president while reshuffling several senior leaders within the organisation.

The announcement was made during a brief media briefing in Durban, where party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu described the changes as “organisational decisions aimed at strengthening the party.”

The latest restructuring is one of the most significant leadership shake-ups since the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party was formed in December 2023. It comes as the party continues to consolidate its leadership structure while preparing for future political challenges.

Duduzane Zuma appointed first deputy president

One of the biggest announcements was the appointment of Duduzane Zuma as the MK Party’s first deputy president.

Duduzane replaces former Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe, who has been relieved of his duties as first deputy president with immediate effect. Despite the leadership change, Hlophe will continue serving as the party’s parliamentary leader, maintaining his role in Parliament where the MK Party remains the official opposition.

Duduzane Zuma, who is the son of former President and MK Party leader Jacob Zuma, has steadily risen through the party’s ranks.

His appointment follows months of speculation after he joined the party’s Presidential Task Team earlier this year. Duduzane also leads his own political organisation, the All Game Changers party, making his promotion another significant step in his growing political career.

During the briefing, Jacob Zuma and Duduzane Zuma remained seated throughout the announcement and did not address journalists.

MK Party leadership changes continue

The latest MK Party leadership changes extended beyond the appointment of Duduzane Zuma.

Former government minister Nkosinathi (Nathi) Nhleko was removed as national chairperson and replaced by Reverend Mxolisi Phakathi, a former member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature representing the African Transformation Movement.

The party also announced that Nomsa Dlamini had been removed from her position as deputy secretary-general.

Her replacement is Lindiwe Mtshali, who currently serves as secretary of the MK Women’s League.

These appointments form part of what the party describes as efforts to strengthen its organisational structures ahead of future political activities.

John Hlophe remains parliamentary leader

Although John Hlophe has lost his position as first deputy president, the party confirmed that he remains an important figure within its leadership.

According to spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu, Hlophe will continue leading the party’s parliamentary caucus.

Mahlangu thanked Hlophe for his contribution to the growth of the party.

“President Zuma extends his sincere gratitude to Dr Hlophe for his leadership, dedication and invaluable contribution to the growth and strengthening of the MK Party and wishes him well in his continued service to the organisation,” Mahlangu said.

The decision allows Hlophe to continue overseeing parliamentary matters while Duduzane Zuma assumes broader organisational responsibilities within the party.

Jacob Zuma oversees further organisational restructuring

Party leader Jacob Zuma continues to play a central role in reshaping the MK Party’s leadership.

Another notable announcement confirmed that KwaZulu-Natal leader Willies Mchunu had been appointed to serve within the Presidential Collective.

According to the party, Mchunu will provide strategic guidance, organisational support and advice on matters requiring presidential oversight.

Meanwhile, the Strategic Presidential Team has officially been dissolved.

Interestingly, the Presidential Task Team—which had only recently been dissolved—has now been reinstated.

Duduzane Zuma remains one of its members.

The rapid restructuring highlights the party’s continued efforts to refine its leadership model less than three years after its formation.

Financial allegations addressed during briefing

During the media briefing, the MK Party also responded to recent reports alleging that approximately R33 million had allegedly been diverted into bank accounts operating outside the party’s authorised financial system.

The allegations stem from reports referencing a forensic investigation.

Mahlangu said Jacob Zuma had noted the allegations with concern but had not yet received the forensic report.

According to the spokesperson, Zuma instructed that the report be formally submitted to him before any official response is issued.

“When we see it, we will be able to respond,” Mahlangu said.

The party indicated that it would provide further comment after reviewing the findings.

Duduzane Zuma’s political influence grows

The appointment further strengthens Duduzane Zuma’s influence within South African politics.

Having previously remained largely outside frontline politics despite being widely known as the son of former President Jacob Zuma, Duduzane has increasingly become involved in the MK Party’s organisational structures.

Political analysts have long speculated that he could eventually assume a more senior leadership position.

His promotion to first deputy president places him second in the party hierarchy behind Jacob Zuma.
