Additionally, he threatened an immediate cessation of all US payments and subsidies.

In response, Cyril Ramaphosa did not mince words. He characterized the US President’s stance as an attempt to undermine global cooperation.

“South Africa is and will remain a full, active and constructive member of the G20,” Ramaphosa asserted. He reminded the nation that G20 membership is permanent. This applies to the 19 member countries and the African Union. Crucially, it acts as a consensus-driven body. Therefore, no single host nation possesses the unilateral authority to expel a member.

The President’s calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the rhetoric from Washington. This signals Pretoria’s intention to maintain the moral high ground. Simultaneously, they vigorously defend their sovereignty.

Donald Trump and the “Afrikaner Human Rights Allegations”

Controversial claims regarding the safety of white South Africans fuel President Trump’s hostility. Trump cited the government’s alleged refusal to acknowledge “horrific human rights abuses”. Consequently, he used this as a primary reason for the proposed ban.

However, Ramaphosa addressed these Afrikaner human rights allegations head-on. He dismantled them as “blatant misinformation.” Trump alleged that people kill white citizens and seize their farms “randomly”. Yet, local experts and agricultural bodies have widely discredited this narrative.

“We reject these claims with the contempt they deserve,” Ramaphosa stated. He emphasized that South Africa acts as a constitutional democracy. Thus, it commits to the rule of law and protects all citizens, regardless of race. The President labelled the accusations as “misinformation and distortions.” By doing so, he sought to correct the global narrative. He warned that such falsehoods are dangerous and threaten social cohesion.

The G20 Summit 2026 and the Protocol Dispute

Beyond ideology, a procedural dispute fueled the fire. Donald Trump claimed his decision to ban South Africa responded to a perceived snub. Allegedly, South Africa “refused” to hand over the presidency to a senior US representative.
