Polokwane City secure controversial 2-1 win over Richards Bay
PLK City secure controversial 2-1 win over Richards Bay as Polokwane City kicked off the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign with an important away victory at the Mhlathuzi Sports Complex on Sunday. Goals from Ndamulelo Maphangule and Tidimalo Molokwane gave Rise and Shine a two-goal advantage before Richards Bay fought back through captain Simphiwe Mcineka.
The match ended in dramatic fashion after a late penalty decision in favour of Polokwane City was overturned following consultation between the referee, assistant officials and the fourth official, leaving the visitors frustrated despite claiming all three points.
The result marked a winning start for new Bayano Moloto era as head coach of Polokwane City, while Richards Bay began the new league season with disappointment on home soil.
Polokwane City make dream start to Betway Premiership season
Polokwane City entered the new Betway Premiership campaign looking to build on last season’s impressive top-eight finish. Under newly appointed coach Bayano Moloto, the Limpopo club wasted little time showing they intend to remain competitive this season.
Rise and Shine dominated the opening exchanges against Richards Bay, enjoying more possession and creating the better opportunities during the first half.
The visitors’ aggressive pressing and quick passing unsettled the Natal Rich Boys, allowing Polokwane City to dictate the pace of the contest from the opening whistle.
Ndamulelo Maphangule gives visitors deserved lead
The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute through Ndamulelo Maphangule.
New signing Giovanni Philander delivered an inviting corner into the penalty area, where Maphangule timed his run perfectly before powering a header into the far corner beyond goalkeeper Ian Otieno.
The goal rewarded Polokwane City’s positive approach and immediately put Richards Bay under pressure in front of their home supporters.
Philander continued to impress throughout the opening half, causing problems with his delivery from wide areas while linking effectively with the attacking players.
Richards Bay search for equaliser before half-time
Richards Bay responded positively after conceding and nearly restored parity before the break.
Thulani Gumede produced a powerful low strike after exchanging passes with Lindokuhle Zikhali, but Polokwane City goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula reacted brilliantly to make an important save.
The home side enjoyed more possession during the closing stages of the first half but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined Polokwane City defence.
Rise and Shine entered the interval with a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Polokwane City double their lead after the restart
The visitors continued where they left off after half-time and quickly extended their advantage.
Ten minutes into the second half, Banele Mnguni unleashed a powerful effort from outside the penalty area that struck the upright.
The rebound fell kindly for Tidimalo Molokwane, who reacted quickest inside the six-yard box before calmly finishing into an empty net to make it 2-0.
The second goal reflected Polokwane City’s dominance during large periods of the encounter and appeared to place the result beyond Richards Bay’s reach.
Richards Bay fight back through Simphiwe Mcineka
Despite falling two goals behind, Richards Bay refused to surrender.
Captain Simphiwe Mcineka inspired hope for the home supporters in the 69th minute when he met an accurate delivery from Moses Mthembu before heading powerfully into the top corner.
The goal shifted momentum as Richards Bay increased the intensity of their attacks in search of an equaliser.
The hosts pressed higher up the field and forced Polokwane City deeper into their own half during the closing stages.
However, the visitors remained organised defensively and continued to frustrate the home side.
Controversial finish overshadows victory
The closing moments provided the biggest talking point of the afternoon.
With only minutes remaining, the referee initially awarded Polokwane City a penalty after what appeared to be a handball inside the penalty area.
Richards Bay players immediately protested the decision, prompting discussions between the referee, assistant referee and fourth official.
Following the consultation, the referee dramatically reversed the penalty decision and instead awarded Polokwane City a corner kick.
The unexpected change sparked frustration among the visiting players, who believed they had been denied a legitimate penalty.
Although the decision had no impact on the final result, it added controversy to an otherwise entertaining Betway Premiership opener.
The dramatic ending is likely to generate debate among football supporters and analysts in the days ahead.
Bayano Moloto enjoys winning debut
The victory represented the perfect beginning for Bayano Moloto, who recently replaced Phuti Mohafe as head coach of Polokwane City.
Winning away from home in the opening fixture provides confidence for both the coaching staff and players as they prepare for the demanding season ahead.
Moloto will also be encouraged by his side’s organisation, work ethic and ability to convert key opportunities.
While there is still room for improvement, the performance suggested that Polokwane City could once again challenge for a place in the league’s top eight.
Richards Bay face early questions
For Richards Bay, it was a disappointing introduction to the new campaign under head coach Ronnie Gabriel.
Although the Natal Rich Boys improved significantly during the second half, they struggled to match Polokwane City’s intensity during the opening hour of the match.
Gabriel will take encouragement from his team’s fighting spirit after Mcineka’s goal but will know improvements are required if Richards Bay hope to avoid another difficult campaign.
Defensive lapses and missed opportunities ultimately proved costly against a well-drilled Polokwane City side.
New signings make immediate impact
One of the biggest positives for Polokwane City was the impressive contribution from new arrival Giovanni Philander.
The midfielder created the opening goal with a perfectly delivered corner and consistently threatened Richards Bay’s defence throughout the match.
His set-piece quality and attacking creativity could become valuable assets for Bayano Moloto during the season.
Meanwhile, Ndamulelo Maphangule produced a commanding performance in midfield in addition to opening the scoring, while Tidimalo Molokwane displayed excellent awareness to convert the rebound for the second goal.
